Gray took advantage of a wholly ineffective Max Scherzer and blasted a three-run bomb off Scherzer for his second homer of the season. The 30-year-old has done a nice job as a fill-in to open the season with a .273/.346/.591 slash over 22 at-bats.

Gray debuted with the Rays 2023 and returned to the organization last year after spending 2024 elsewhere. The Red Sox acquired him over the winter, but they traded him to the Twins in January when they realized they wouldn’t be able to sneak him through waivers. He’s 4-for-11 with eight RBI as Brooke Lee’s backup at shortstop this season, and though he hardly projects as a long-term regular, it’s worth wondering if he might be a better player than Lee against right-handers right now. It probably won’t matter much for fantasy purposes either way.

The Red Sox acquired Gray from the Rays in November, but they now need a 40-man roster spot to sign Ranger Suarez officially, so Gray will land in Minnesota. The 29-year-old is a good defender at multiple infield positions, but hit .207/.264/.369 in 122 plate appearances over three seasons with the Rays. He may fulfill the role in Minnesota that Willi Castro left behind, but he won’t bring near the same offensive value.

The 29-year-old Gray has struggled to establish himself in the majors while hitting .207/.264/.369 in 122 plate appearances over three seasons, but he has made nice gains in cutting his strikeout rate in Triple-A the last two years. He has a solid glove, especially at third, and ample power, so he’s decent enough infield insurance. He also has one option year left, which the Red Sox will probably take advantage of.
