It was García’s first time throwing off a mound in Blue Jays camp since undergoing elbow surgery last August. The 35-year-old veteran reliever won’t be ready in time for Opening Day but he’s progressing towards an early-season return to Toronto’s high-leverage mix behind closer Jeff Hoffman and new setup specialist Tyler Rogers.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider was hopeful that García might be ready for Opening Day, but that has changed to “100 percent” that he will not be available for the start of 2026. The right-hander will be a high-leverage option in the late innings once available, but for now, there’s an open spot in the Toronto bullpen.

García’s surgery took place in August and was only to clean up scar tissue in his elbow, so it didn’t seem like Opening Day would be in doubt here. Still, bringing him along slowly isn’t a bad idea, as he’s totaled just 60 innings between the last two seasons.

It’s an unfortunate development for the Blue Jays who had been holding out hope that the 35-year-old hurler would be able to return to their bullpen before the season is through. The good news, is that he should be fully recovered and ready to go for the start of spring training in 2026.

The 34-year-old hurler recently began experiencing ulnar nerve symptoms in his elbow while he was ramping back up following a left ankle sprain. The Jays are hopeful that after a couple of weeks he’ll be able to begin a throwing progression. It sounds like he’s not going to be able to rejoin the Jays’ bullpen until late August at the earliest.

García returns to the injured list for the second time this season. No word yet on the severity of the sprain, which will determine how much time he winds up missing. The 34-year-old veteran remains a key component of Toronto’s high-leverage mix behind closer Jeff Hoffman.

García will rest for a few days before he resumes throwing. He’ll be eligible to return on June 7, and the Jays would surely love to have him back then.

Garcia will miss the rest of May with the shoulder issue, and there’s no guarantee that he’ll be ready when he’s eligible to be activated, with shoulder issues usually taking a longer stint on the injured list than the minimum time. Garcia was a high-leverage option for Toronto, so he’ll be missed by the Blue Jays more than than the scarce few that roster him in fantasy leagues.

With Jeff Hoffman unavailable on Thursday, Garcia stepped into the closer’s role and filled in admirably, retiring all three hitters that he faced in order including punchouts of Trevor Story and Triston Casas. On the season, Garcia has fired 14 shutout innings with a 0.71 WHIP and an 18/4 K/BB ratio.
