Heaney heads back to the minors as part of Los Angeles’ stay-ready group after allowing three runs over two innings on Saturday in relief. The 34-year-old’s return to Los Angeles didn’t go smoothly, but he could be an option during the postseason if injuries decimate their middle relief mix.

The Dodgers signed Heaney to a minor league contract at the start of September to provide some extra pitching depth. He’ll likely eat some innings out of the bullpen at some point over the weekend in a pair of meaningless contests against the Mariners. Will Klein was optioned to Triple-A to clear a spot on the Dodgers’ active roster.

Heaney gave up five runs over two-thirds of an inning Monday in his second relief appearance after being moved to the pen by the Pirates. While there’s definitely some financial motivation for the Pirates here, in that Heaney was in line to collect probably $500,000 in bonuses if he remained a starter, it’s not like he didn’t deserve to lose his spot; he had an 8.19 ERA in his last 10 starts before being bumped to the pen. He departs now with a 5.39 ERA in 120 1/3 innings overall.

Pirates interim manager Don Kelly made it official that Heaney is headed to the bullpen after being lit up for six runs — five earned — over four innings earlier this week against the division-leading Brewers, which allows the Pirates to pivot to some of their younger alternatives. It’s unclear how they’ll fill his rotation spot on Sunday, but top prospect Bubba Chandler is not expected to be called up, according to Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The 34-year-old left-hander walked two batters on the evening while striking out three. After serving up a solo home to Brice Turang in the opening inning, Heaney got blasted for four more runs in the third inning to break the game wide open, including a solo shot by Christian Yelich. He gave up another run in the fourth before mercifully exiting. Heaney got just four whiffs on 90 pitches on the night, registering a CSW of 24 percent. He’ll try to get his season back on track as he carries a 4.99 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and an 83/38 K/BB ratio (119 innings) into Sunday’s battle against the Cubs in Chicago.

Heaney left with a 2-1 lead, which would be frustrating if the Giants wouldn’t have come back and won this game. The left-hander struck out only one batter, but also gave up just two hits; one of them a solo homer from Jerar Encarnacion. Heaney was outstanding to begin the year, and while this was closer to that version, he’s still someone who is hard to trust in fantasy circles. That applies for next week’s scheduled tilt against the Brewers.

Heaney gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out one. The 34-year-old left-hander had a 3.41 ERA after his first 11 starts this year, but has struggled with a 6.70 ERA in 11 starts since then. Heaney has a 4.89 ERA and 79/36 K/BB ratio in 110 1/3 innings this year. He’s lined up to face the Giants at home next week.

Heaney was outstanding over five shutout innings of work against the Diamondbacks. He scattered two hits and no walks while striking out four batters. The 34-year-old left-hander ends the day with a 4.79 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and a 78/35 K/BB ratio across 107 innings. He’ll take on the Rockies in Colorado on Friday.

Heaney gave up nine hits, walked two and struck out one. The 34-year-old left-hander had a 3.33 ERA on the season as late as June 12, but has since allowed a 10.65 ERA in his last six starts. Even in what on paper was a plus matchup against the White Sox, Heaney couldn’t be trusted. He has a 5.03 ERA and 74/35 K/BB ratio in 102 innings this year. Heaney is lined up to face the Diamondbacks at home next weekend.

Heaney’s velocity has been down all year, but at least he’s been consistent; he’d averaged in between 89.8 and 90.5 mph with his fastball every start until tonight, when he was down to 89.5 mph despite not pitching very deep into the game. His slider was actually down 1.8 mph from his season average. It seems like bad news for a pitcher the Pirates are certainly planning to trade later this month. Heaney dropped to 4-8 with a 4.41 ERA. He’ll likely face the Twins on Sunday.

Heaney took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning before Victor Scott II came through with a two-out single. He finished with seven strikeouts and only issued one walk. It was a badly-needed rebound effort for the 34-year-old southpaw after surrendering seven runs in each of his previous two starts. He’ll bring a respectable 4.16 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 71/31 K/BB ratio across 93 innings (17 starts) into a road tilt on Sunday against the Mariners.

The 34-year-old southpaw walked three and struck out three batters on the night. Most of the damage was done via the long ball, with Joey Ortiz socking a two-run dinger in the third and a solo shot in the fourth inning while Caleb Durbin belted a three-run shot in the fourth. Heaney also allowed the first two hitters to reach to open the fifth inning and one ultimately scored against the bullpen. He got five swings and misses on 85 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of only 24 percent. He’ll attempt to bounce back as he brings a 4.38 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and a 64/30 K/BB ratio (86 1/3 innings) into Monday’s matchup against the Cardinals.

Heaney got off to a great start this year in spite of some issues with diminished velocity, but he’s been below average since the beginning of May and his peripherals have gotten particularly bad; he has a 30/21 K/BB and he’s given up 10 homers over 51 innings in his last 10 starts. The loss today leaves him 3-6 with a 3.94 ERA. He’s set to face the Brewers next.

Heaney has posted a 3.33 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 14 starts for Pittsburgh this season. He’s signed to just a one-year contract, so it seems like a given that he will be shipped off at the deadline. Perhaps to clear a rotation spot for Bubba Chandler, who remains in the minors. Feinsand lists the Astros, Dodgers and Cubs as potential destinations.

The 34-year-old southpaw racked up seven strikeouts on the evening and didn’t walk a batter. He showed no ill effects of the calf cramping that forced him to make an early exit his last time out. Unfortunately, two of the four hits that he allowed left the yard — a two-run blast by Pete Crow-Armstrong in the fourth inning and solo shot by Seiya Suzuki in the sixth. Heaney generated 12 whiffs on 76 pitches on the night, registering a CSW of 30 percent. He’ll look to get back in the win column as he totes a 3.33 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and a 59/24 K/BB ratio (78 1/3 innings) into Wednesday’s matchup against the Tigers in Detroit.

Heaney struck out three batters on the day and didn’t allow a base on balls. He served up a solo homer to Manny Machado in the opening inning and then kept the Padres off the board until the sixth where Jackson Merrill chased him with a run-scoring double. Heaney generated four swings and misses on 87 pitches in the ballgame, posting a CSW of 30 percent. He’ll carry an impressive 3.39 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and a 47/24 K/BB ratio (66 1/3 innings) into Saturday’s matchup against the Phillies.

Heaney allowed two homers, but he was consistently in trouble while giving up eight hits and three walks against just two strikeouts. The 33-year-old southpaw had allowed four total runs in his previous three starts, and it was a rare off night for Heaney in 2025. He’ll still take a 3.41 ERA into his next scheduled start against the Padres, which is scheduled for Sunday.

Back-to-back doubles put the Braves on the board with a run in the second inning. Matt Olson then took Heaney deep for a solo homer in the third. Heaney kept Atlanta off the board for three more innings, ending his day with a quality start. He’s struggled to miss bats of late, collecting just five strikeouts over his last three starts. The 33-year-old southpaw with take a 3.15 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and a 36/16 K/BB ratio across 45 2/3 innings into a road start against the Phillies on Friday.

After a hot start to the season, Heaney has now allowed eight runs on 13 hits in his last 8 1/3 innings against the Padres and Cubs. Heaney was likely always just a streamer for fantasy purposes, even with his slight pitch mix changes. Things don’t get any easier next week against the Braves, and he can be dropped in most formats.

Heaney took a no-no into the sixth, but it was broken up by Travis d’Arnaud with a double. He was able to keep d’Arnaud from going any further in yet another impressive outing for the 33-year-old southpaw. Heaney now has a glistening 1.72 ERA with a 31/6 K/BB, and while it’s not even kind of sustainable, there’s no denying he’s looked the part over the first three-plus weeks. His next outing is schedule for Tuesday against the Cubs.

Heaney scattered five hits while issuing two walks, and he struck out four. Only one of the hits was for extra bases — a double by Nathaniel Lowe — and outside of that, he had the Washington lineup off balance in a very strong start for the 33-year-old veteran. With the scoreless outing, Heaney now has a 2.13 ERA, and he’ll try and replicate this success against the Angels next week. It’s worth a look for those taking a chance on a streamer in the early portion of 2025.

Heaney looked sharp through two frames before giving up a double, hitting a pair of batters, and serving up a grand slam to Elly De La Cruz in the third inning. He finished with six strikeouts and only issued two walks. He’s posted a solid 3.00 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 18/4 K/BB ratio across 18 innings (three starts) to open the year.
