Matt Shaw takes over at second base with Hoerner on the bench for some additional rest after making an early departure from Friday’s series opener at Wrigley Field with neck tightness. The 28-year-old second baseman has been a revelation, hitting .297/.374/.461 with four homers, 26 RBI and seven steals through 32 games, as an increase in over-the-fence power has pushed him into true superstar territory this season. There should be a clearer picture regarding his status at some point this weekend, but fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now.

Matt Shaw pinch-hit and took over at second base. This doesn’t sound especially serious at this point, but we’re sure we’ll get a real update at some point in the next 24 hours. Hoerner had already gotten a hit and scored a run, and was hitting .291/.370/.449 with four homers and seven stolen bases entering the game — he’s been one of the MVPs for fantasy baseball up to this point.

Who is this power hitter? Hoerner now has four home runs in 23 games this season after hitting just seven across 156 games last season. He’s also over a third of the way to last year’s RBI total with 22 in nearly four weeks of play. There’s nothing super discernible in his profile that says this power surge will continue, so enjoy it while it lasts for one of the game’s best second basemen.

He drilled a no-doubt 392-foot homer to left field off Kodai Senga to extend Chicago’s lead early in the game. Hitting .342/.420/.553 with six steals and three homers, Hoerner is one of the most valuable players in fantasy baseball to this point. The power surge probably won’t last -- his career high is 10 -- but this has been an incredible start for Chicago’s stalwart second baseman.

It may be a serious understatement to say Hoerner is on fire at the dish, with five multi-hit performances in his last eight games since April 7. The 28-year-old second baseman took Phillies starter Jesús Luzardo deep into the left-center field seats for his first round-tripper of the season in the fifth inning to give the Cubs a commanding 5-1 lead at the time. He also added two more hits and a stolen base, just for good measure, raising his batting average to .324 through 18 games this season.

Hoerner has delivered early-round fantasy value this season as an elite contributor in the batting average department, registering five multi-hit performances through 17 games already. The 28-year-old speedster put Chicago on the board with an RBI single in the third inning before delivering a go-ahead two-run single in the sixth. He’s in the midst of a hot streak, batting .303 (20-for-66) with one homer, 13 RBI and five steals.

Hoerner served as Chicago’s primary catalyst during Wednesday evening’s series finale at Tropicana Field, taking Rays starter Joe Boyle deep to left field to open the contest. It was his first big fly of the year. The 28-year-old speedster also added an RBI double in the fifth inning as part of a three-hit effort. He’s recorded three multi-hit efforts over his last seven games and is batting .333 (14-for-42) with six doubles, one homer and nine RBI through 12 games. He’s also taken eight walks and only struck out six times during that span.

Hoerner has been hitting fifth against righties, but he switched places with Michael Busch against a lefty today and continued his nice start. He’s 4-for-4 stealing bases through six games. His career high there was 43 in 2023. Last year, he was 29-for-35 stealing bases in 156 games.

That is a lot of money, though deferrals are likely to bring down the present-day value. Hoerner and the Cubs had reportedly agreed to an extension yesterday, but the terms were undisclosed. This is the fourth-largest contract ever given to a second baseman and one that will keep Hoerner in Chicago for the next six years. Hoerner does a lot of things well as an elite defender and fantastic contact hitter. Those just aren’t skills that often age well and the Cubs now have him, Dansby Swanson, and Alex Bregman on long-term contracts that extend well into those players’ 30s.

The deal, which is pending a physical, would keep Hoerner in Chicago through the 2031 season. Hoerner had been set to hit free agency following the 2026 season, which let to rampant trade speculation surrounding him throughout the winter. He’s now a piece that they will build around going forward.

It’s flown a bit under the radar fantasy-wise, but Hoerner has put together a strong spring, batting .389 (14-for-36) with six extra-base hits, including a pair of home runs, in 14 games. The 28-year-old speedster will occupy the leadoff spot in Chicago’s formidable lineup and projects as a top-10 second baseman fantasy-wise thanks to a realistic 25-steal, 80-runs scored floor to go along with a strong batting average.

The Yankees have also reached out to the Cubs about Hoerner, but all indications, for now, are that the Cubs would rather hold onto Hoerner and trade Matt Shaw. Both Hoerner and Donovan are high-contact rate hitters who would provide nice balance to a Giants infield that features power bats in Willy Adames, Matt Chapman, and Rafael Devers. Nothing appears imminent, but the Giants don’t appear comfortable beginning the 2026 season with Casey Schmitt or Christian Koss as their starting second baseman.

It seems highly unlikely that the Cubs will trade Hoerner, unless it comes after a move to sign Alex Bregman or Bo Bichette. Matt Shaw would seem to be the odd man out in such a scenario, but the Cubs might then be open to trading Hoerner, who is one year away from free agency, and keeping Shaw in the lineup. Hoerner, 28, had a career-high 114 OPS+ last season and won his second Gold Glove at second base. He could also slot in at shortstop on another team.

Zeglin missed all of last season due to injury after posting a 0.95 ERA and 90/16 K/BB ratio across 66 innings over 25 appearances between Low-A Myrtle Beach and High-A South Bend. The 25-year-old reliever is a textbook definition of a lottery ticket arm. Meanwhile, the Cubs receive $250,000 in international bonus money to close out the rest of the signing period.

Given the first-half performances of Pete Crow-Armstrong, Kyle Tucker and Seiya Suzuki, it’s pretty ludicrous now to think that Hoerner is the one Cub likely to show up on NL MVP ballots. His .747 OPS is modest, but at .302, he’s the only player with a chance of overtaking Trea Turner (.305) for the batting crown and he’s one of the league’s most valuable defenders. He ought to be somewhere in the top 10.

Hoerner led off the home half of the first inning with a single but wound up getting stranded at third base. He then plated a run with a fielder’s choice in the second inning that extended the Cubs’ lead to 2-0 and proceeded to steal second base before being left there. The 28-year-old infielder then launched his first home run of the season — a 364-foot (97.0 mph EV) two-run shot off of Steven Matz in the sixth inning — which pulled the Cubs to within a run at 8-7.
