The Red Sox aren’t planning to non-tender Tanner Houck, sources told MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo.
Houck is expected to miss most or all of next season following elbow surgery and has only two years to go before free agency, so it’s not an easy call, especially given that he really struggled before going down last season he’s due around $4 million in arbitration. Perhaps the two sides can work out a two-year deal with about a $4 million salary.

Tanner Houck underwent a “hybrid reconstruction of the right ulnar collateral ligament with flexor tendon repair” on Monday, the Red Sox announced.
That this was a hybrid surgery rather than the normal Tommy John opens up the possibility that Houck could return late next year, and it probably makes it more likely that the Red Sox will retain him in the offseason. With two years to go before free agency, he seemed like a candidate to be non-tendered if he was ruled out for 2026.

Tanner Houck underwent season-ending elbow surgery.
It’s officially a hybrid UCL reconstruction with a flexor tendon repair, which is likely to sideline Houck for the entire 2026 season. The 29-year-old right-hander hit the injured list back in mid-May with a flexor strain and ultimately couldn’t avoid elbow surgery after multiple setbacks. H

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that Tanner Houck will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery.
It’s a brutal development for both Houck and the Red Sox, especially given the timing of the impending procedure, which likely sidelines him through the 2026 campaign. The 29-year-old right-hander has been out since mid-May with a flexor strain and ultimately couldn’t avoid elbow surgery after multiple setbacks. He posted a disastrous 8.04 ERA in nine starts to open the season, and at this point, it’s fair to question whether he remains in Boston’s long-term rotation plans.

Red Sox transferred RHP Tanner Houck to the 60-day injured list.
Nothing has changed in the prognosis for the 29-year-old right-hander, this was done merely as a procedural move to free up a spot on the team’s 40-man roster. The Red Sox are still in the process of seeking opinions on Houck’s right flexor pronator strain and there remains no clear timeline for when (of if) he’ll be able to return this season.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters that Tanner Houck is still getting opinions on his right flexor pronator strain.
Houck was shutdown indefinitely Monday, and while Cora told reporters that surgery isn’t currently on the table, it sounds like it’s becoming more of a possibility. The right-hander hasn’t been ruled out for the season just yet, and it’s possible he could return before 2025 comes to a conclusion. It just doesn’t seem very plausible that Houck pitches for Boston before 2026.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters Tanner Houck (forearm) has been shut down indefinitely.
Cora added that surgery isn’t currently on the table for Houck. The 29-year-old righty was shut down over the weekend after experiencing renewed flexor soreness. While he hasn’t been officially ruled out for the season, a return to Boston this year seems highly unlikely, which means Houck can be safely dropped in most fantasy formats.

Red Sox returned RHP Tanner Houck from his rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester.
It does not appear that the return has anything to do with an activation for Houck. The right-hander has been out of action since the middle of May because of his right flexor pronator strain, and there’s no timetable for when he’ll be able to rejoin the Boston pitching staff.

Tanner Houck (forearm) allowed one run on three hits in 4 1/2 innings for Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday.
Houck struck out six and walked two on the day while throwing 61 percent of his pitches for strikes and posting a 39 percent whiff rate and 33 percent CSW. Despite a report of him hitting 101 mph on the radar gun, Houck sat 96 mph with his sinker and four-seam fastball. With Richard Fitts and Hunter Dobbins pitching well, there is no immediate spot in the rotation for Houck, but his stuff could play up in a bullpen role, possibly a long relief role for the second half.

Tanner Houck (forearm) allowed four runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings for Triple-A Worcester on Sunday.
Houck struck out three and walked one while averaging 93.6 mph on his sinker, which is down about one mph from his MLB innings this year. With Kyle Harrison likely joining the Boston rotation in a week or two, Houck may have to move to the bullpen in order to contribute MLB innings in 2025.

Tanner Houck (forearm) allowed four runs on three hits in 1 2/3 innings for Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday.
Houck sat 94 mph on his sinker and struck out two while also walking two. He threw 26 of his 49 pitches for strikes in the outing, but he was also clearly working on some changes, throwing more cutters than he did when he was in Boston’s rotation. Houck’s early-season struggles were not simply injury related, so the Red Sox will continue to work on his approach in the minors in the hopes of recapturing some of that early season magic form 2024.

Tanner Houck (forearm) allowed one run in his lone inning of work on Wednesday in a minor league rehab start for Triple-A Worcester.
Houck was lifted after issuing a leadoff walk in the second inning after throwing 32 pitches (18 strikes) in his rehab debut. The 28-year-old righty will need a couple additional outings to continue building up his stamina and pitch count before returning to Boston’s rotation. He’s been out since mid-May due to a forearm flexor strain.

Tanner Houck will make a minor league rehab start on Wednesday for Triple-A Worcester.
Houck has completed several bullpen sessions since hitting the injured list back in mid-May with a forearm flexor strain and will progress to his first rehab outing later this week. The 28-year-old righty got off to a disastrous start this season, so it wouldn’t be surprising if he got a couple rehab starts to attempt to iron things out and get back on track.

Tanner Houck (forearm) will thrown an up and down bullpen later this week.
An up and down bullpen is one in which the pitcher begins to simulate a game setting by throwing a simulated inning and then resting as if their team was hitting before returning to the mound. It will help the Red Sox to determine how Houck’s forearm is responding to the stop and start of pitching in an MLB game. If this goes well, Houck could move on to live bullpens against hitters. He’s still a ways away and it’s unclear what kind of role he’ll return to.

Tanner Houck (forearm) threw a bullpen session on Saturday.
Houck resumed throwing in late May and is likely several weeks away from making a minor league rehab start. He hit the injured list back in early May with a flexor strain and remains without an official return timetable. He’s a complete non-factor for fantasy purposes at the moment.

Tanner Houck allowed six hits and two earned runs with two walks and two strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Red Sox on Wednesday.
Coming off his best start of the season last week against the Blue Jays, Houck just couldn’t keep the good times rolling. The Rangers put traffic on the bases in each inning besides the first, Houck was lucky to escape the third with just one run home after he made a throwing error, and Adolis García barely snuck a homerun around the foul pole in the fourth. Then, he was chased in the fifth after allowing two hits and a sacrifice fly. Again, Houck has refused to adjust against left-handed batters just throwing sinkers and sweepers to them repeatedly. His plan was simply to throw those pitches harder – they got up to 97 mph and 86 mph respectively – but that still puts him in a difficult spot against them. He’ll head to Detroit for his next scheduled start against the Tigers.

Tanner Houck was brilliant in a tough-luck no-decision against the Blue Jays on Thursday night, allowing just one run on four hits over seven stellar frames.
The right-hander racked up six strikeouts on the evening and didn’t walk a batter. The lone tally against him came on a solo home run off the bat of Daulton Varsho in the seventh inning. Houck exited with the Red Sox leading 2-1 and in line for a victory, but the bullpen was unable to oblige. He generated 11 swings and misses on 86 pitches on the night, registering a CSW of 26 percent. He’ll see if he can build off of this fine performance as he totes a 6.38 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and a 30/12 K/BB ratio (36 2/3 innings) into Wednesday’s matchup against the Rangers.

Tanner Houck was charged with four runs over five innings on Saturday in a loss to the Guardians.
Houck managed to avert total disaster and give Boston’s bullpen a break by completing five frames in the front-end of Saturday’s doubleheader at Progressive Field. Things were looking shaky early on when he surrendered five hits in a disastrous four-run opening frame, but he managed to settle in afterwards, somehow keeping Cleveland off the scoreboard over his final four innings of work. He struck out six and only handed out one free pass. He’s managed to rebound slightly with a pair of respectable outings against the White Sox and Guardians after getting obliterated for 12 runs in a loss to the Rays back on April 14. He’ll try to keep the momentum going when he faces the Blue Jays on Thursday in a road start.

Tanner Houck allowed two runs on three hits in six innings in a no-decision against the White Sox.
Houck allowed a walk and two hits, including a two-run home run, in the first inning, and it seemed like he was on the road to another brutal start. However, the 28-year-old settled down from there, allowing just one hit in five shutout innings while striking out seven, walking two, and leaving with a 4-2 lead that the bullpen would squander. Houck looked a little bit closer to the starter we saw in the first half of the 2024 season, posting a 30 percent whiff rate and 34 percent CSW. His sinker pounded the strike zone, and the sweeper missed plenty of bats, which was enough for today. Things will get a little tougher next week against the Guardians where Houck is not a recommended start.

Tanner Houck was obliterated for a career-high 12 runs — 11 earned — over 2 1/3 innings on Monday in a loss to the Rays.
It’s difficult to describe how badly Houck is struggling right now. He was knocked around for a staggering 10 hits in this one, including home runs by veteran Yandy Díaz and rookie Kameron Misner, as he melted down in truly spectacular fashion on Monday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field. He notched only one strikeout, issued two walks and was pulled after just 61 pitches. The 28-year-old righty has recorded two strikeouts or fewer in three of his four starts to open the year and holds a calamitous 9.16 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 11/9 K/BB ratio across 18 2/3 innings. He’s clearly better than this, but taking some time to reset mentally might not be a bad idea.
