The 30-year-old outfielder elected free agency on Wednesday after refusing an outright assignment to Triple-A Sugar Land. He explored what’s out there on the market and ultimately decided that it makes the most sense to remain with the Astros. He’ll continue to function as extra depth at the Triple-A level.

It looks like Johnson, who does have an option remaining, will get a spot on the Orioles’ roster, probably in place of Jordyn Adams. Johnson, a 30-year-old former Guardians prospect, spent last year with the Orioles organization, hitting .259/.320/.448 with 21 homers and 17 steals in Triple-A and going 0-for-1 in one major league game. He’d hit .278/.322/.519 for the Giants’ Triple-A club this year. His time in the majors could be short-lived with Dylan Beavers perhaps in line for a callup this weekend and Colton Cowser not expected to be down for long.
