Don Mattingly, who joined the team as bench coach this offseason, will take over as interim manager. Thomson becomes the second manager fired this month after the Red Sox fired Alex Cora over the weekend. In fact, many reports suggest that Thomson’s firing could be directly tied to that, since Dave Dombrowski, the Phillies’ president of baseball operations, has a close relationship with Cora from their time together in Boston. A potential manager swap was made easier with the Phillies’ getting out to a 9-19 start to the season, tied with the Mets for the worst record in baseball. Thomson ends his Phillies career with a record of 355-270 for a .568 winning percentage, which is second-best in franchise history. He took the Phillies to the World Series in 2022, but the team then lost in the NLCS in 2023, the Division Series in 2024, and the Division Series in 2025. Thomson will likely get another chance to manage if he wants one.

Thomson was served an automatic ejection for arguing a first-inning call that was overturned by replay review. The Phillies were trailing 4-0 already when he was booted from the contest. It’s worth noting here because the challenge extended Joey Wiemer’s remarkable on-base streak to nine consecutive plate appearances.

Quite the morning for the Phillies, who have also reportedly agreed to a five-year deal with slugger Kyle Schwarber. Thomson has thrived since taking over for Joe Girardi during the 2022 season, posting a 346-251 (.580) record. The Phillies have won back-to-back NL East championships, but that regular season excellence hasn’t gotten them back to the World Series. With this new contract, Thomson will try to finish the job.

The rest of the coaching staff behind Rob Thomson will remain unchanged. Calitri replaced Thomson as the Phillies’ bench coach in 2022 when Joe Girardi was fired and Thomson stepped in as interim manager and had remained in the role ever since. That seemed to set him up to become the team’s manager of the future, but now they want to look outside the organization for a possible heir.

As of the moment, Thomson, who had his 2026 option picked up a year ago, would be a lame duck. The Phillies are 346-251 since Thomson replaced Joe Girardi about two months into the 2022 season, but their postseason results have been getting worse; they lost in the World Series in 2022, the NLCS in 2023 and the NLDS the last two years.
