Angels manager Kurt Suzuki told reporters Johnson will undergo further evaluation and testing after feeling a tweak in his hamstring. The 23-year-old threw just two pitches prior to departing the contest. Johnson has been on the shelf since early April recovering from a viral infection.

Johnson winds up requiring a trip to the injured list after being scratched from Sunday’s start against the Mariners due to illness. The 23-year-old’s absence seems to pave the way for pitching prospect George Klassen to get some run in the rotation for at least another turn or two.

There had been speculation when George Klassen was announced as the starter on Sunday that Johnson was simply getting booted from the rotation after being shelled in his first start, but it sounds like he’s just a bit under the weather. No word yet on when he’ll take his next turn in the Halos’ rotation.

Johnson wasn’t particularly sharp in his season debut, walking four batters and only notching a pair of strikeouts. However, he didn’t get any help from his fielders on several occasions, most notably with two outs in the opening frame when a pop up to shallow center field inexplicably got over the head of second baseman Oswald Peraza, allowing a pair of runs to score on the play. Yoán Moncada committed a mental mistake in the third inning that led directly to another two runs crossing the plate. Neither play technically goes down as an error, but they certainly didn’t help matters. He’ll aim for better results against the Mariners at home on Sunday to finish off a two-start week.

The 74th overall pick in the 2024 draft, Johnson is going to make the Angels for the second year in a row, even though he spent the rest of the year in High-A ball after his demotion last May. He ends a nice spring with a 3.05 ERA and a 23/5 K/BB in 20 2/3 innings. We still doubt he’s ready to be an adequate major league starter this year, but he might get there someday.

Johnson and Kochanowicz will be a part of the Angels’ roster, but their roles are yet to be defined. It’s worth noting that Alek Manoah has a fingernail issue and Grayson Rodriguez is currently experiencing a “dead arm” phase, so it’s feasible those two are the replacements for those arms. Johnson was a disaster in his MLB action in 2025, but there’s considerable upside in his right arm. Kochanowicz offers no fantasy upside.

Johnson, 23, was able to strike out four without allowing a walk. The 23-year-old was in over his head when he surprisingly cracked the Angels’ Opening Day roster, but the 2024 second-round pick has exceptional stuff and could develop into a mid-rotation starter in the coming seasons. Fantasy managers cannot count on 2026 being one of those coming seasons.

The 22-year-old hurler made waves when he cracked the Halos’ Opening Day roster, but he struggled to a 7.36 ERA, 1.98 WHIP and a 16/5 K/BB ratio over 14 2/3 innings in his 14 appearances with the club. He’ll head back for some additional seasoning in the minor leagues and should get another shot to pitch out of the Angels’ bullpen later in the summer.
