Johnson returns to Philadelphia’s bullpen with closer Jhoan Duran hitting the injured list with an oblique strain. The 27-year-old righty was shelled for five runs over 1 1/3 innings earlier this week in his season debut. He’s likely ticketed for low-leverage work.

Johnson has been serving as a closer in Triple-A, recording two saves while allowing two runs on three hits in six innings. He also has an 11/3 K/BB ratio. He should be part of the bridge to Jhoan Duran in the late innings.

No real surprises here as Johnson had an option year remaining, Johnson managed a 1.86 ERA in 9.2 innings during Spring Training, striking out eight. He’ll likely be shuttled back to the majors several times over the course of the season.

Johnson was last seen in the majors striking out five in two scoreless innings on Aug. 4. The Phillies then sent him down the next day and never brought him back. The 27-year-old averaged 98.2 mph with his fastball today, which was up one mph from his 10 major league outings last season. He should have a chance at winning a spot in the Phillies pen, but that he has an option year left works against him.

Johnson threw two innings against Toronto on Thursday, so the Phillies will go with a fresh arm in Alan Rangel to help out the bullpen. Johnson will likely be back as a multi-inning arm for the Philadelphia bullpen before the end of 2025.

Johnson has made the conversion from starter to a relief role seamlessly this season, registering a serviceable 4.91 ERA and 42/21 K/BB ratio across 33 innings (16 appearances) at the Triple-A level. The 26-year-old was a notable pitching prospect a couple years ago with the Orioles, but he’s unlikely to make an impact for fantasy purposes operating in long relief.
