Mattingly served as the bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays for the last three seasons, but decided not to return at the end of the season. While some assumed he would be looking to find a mangerial role again, he never interviewed for any and landed on the Phillies’ staff.

Mattingly is looking to do something different, it seems, though it doesn’t appear as though he’s interviewed for any managerial openings. Phillies reporter Jim Salisbury said he could land in Philadelphia as the team’s new bench coach. Mattingly managed the Dodgers for five years and the Marlins for seven before spending the last three seasons as the Jays’ bench coach.

Kelly took over for Derek Shelton on May 9th, and the Pirates immediately became more competitive. They went 59-65 under Kelly, including a 37-25 home record, which was the ninth-best home winning percentage in all of Major League Baseball. Pittsburgh’s 3.59 staff ERA from under Kelly was also the fourth-best mark in the league from May 9th on. “Donnie earned the respect of the players, front office, and our fans – and he has certainly earned mine,” said Pirates Chairman Bob Nutting. Perhaps the organization will support Kelly by actually spending some money in free agency to field a playoff team.
