Kim struggled in his return from shoulder surgery, hitting .234/.304/.345 in 191 plate appearances for the Rays and Braves, but he was trending up some at the end of the year. Plus, it’s an uncrowded field at shortstop this winter, with Kim ranking second or third at the position behind Bo Bichette and maybe Trevor Story if he opts out of his deal. Even if teams would be wary of signing him to a long-term deal, Kim should be able to beat $16 million on a one-year deal.

Kim’s home run was his fifth of the season. The 29-year-old infielder hit a solo shot off Casey Mize in the fourth inning to put the Braves up 2-0. Kim would tack on a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning. He’s hitting .257 with a .710 OPS and 17 RBI this year.

The newly acquired Kim has wasted no time making an impact with his new club. He notched two hits in his Braves debut on Tuesday and socked a three-run, go-ahead home run here that wound up being the decisive blow. He is the unquestioned starter at shortstop going forward in Atlanta and that playing time floor makes him an intriguing option in deeper leagues.

Kim will make his Atlanta debut after his albatross contract — $16 million player option for 2026 — was claimed off waivers from the spendthrift Rays earlier this week. The versatile 29-year-old, who has been snake-bitten by injuries this season following offseason shoulder surgery, represents an interesting gamble for the Braves if he can return to form next season.

Kim was on the 10-day injured list with lower back inflammation when he was placed on waivers by the Rays. The Braves claimed him on Monday and now have put him on the active roster. Kim is expected to replace Nick Allen as the team’s starting shortstop, assuming his health allows it.

The Rays wanted out from under the $16 million Kim is owed in the form of a player option next season, because of course they did. The Braves are rolling the dice on Kim’s albatross contract in the hopes that he bounces back a full year removed from shoulder surgery. If Kim stays put, he’ll presumably be their shortstop next year. He’s currently on the 10-day injured list with back inflammation, but he’s expected back soon. Nick Allen presumably will turn into a bench player once that happens.
