The Jays will stick with exactly what worked for them in Game 4, running back the same lineup that had tremendous success against the Mariners on Thursday. Once again, here’s the full lineup as the Jays’ will battle against Mariners’ right-hander Bryce Miller on Friday night in Seattle: George Springer (DH), Nathan Lukes (LF), Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (1B), Alejandro Kirk (C), Daulton Varsho (CF), Ernie Clement (3B), Addison Barger (RF), Kiner-Falefa (2B) and Andrés Giménez (SS).

The Jays entered the ninth inning trailing 3-1. They loaded the bases with one out on a pair of walks and a single, setting the stage for Kiner-Falefa’s heroics. He smacked a 1-1 single into left field, plating a pair of runs to tie the game and force extra innings. The 30-year-old infielder finished the night 1-for-2 and is now hitting .264/.300/.332 with one homer, 39 RBI and 15 stolen bases on the season.

Kiner-Falefa returns to Toronto where he spent the early portion of last season prior to being dealt to the Pirates. The 30-year-old infielder’s defensive versatility makes him a strong fit for a Blue Jays roster that is trying to hold off the Yankees and Red Sox for the AL East crown and get back to the postseason for the first time since 2023. They’re picking up the remainder of his $7.5 million salary for this season before he reaches free agency.

If Kiner-Falefa goes unclaimed, he’ll remain in the Pittsburgh organization. The 30-year-old remains ineffective at the plate, but he does offer some value because of his defense and baserunning acumen.

A month ago, Kiner-Falefa was looking like someone who would fetch a nice prospect in a deadline deal. Unfortunately, though, he’s hit .185/.212/.222 in his last 25 games, dropping his OPS from .723 to .638. He’ll still probably get dealt, but the return probably isn’t going to be great.

The Pirates scored four runs off of Brant Hurter in the top half of the 10th inning on Thursday, the final two coming on a two-out, two-run knock by Kiner-Falefa that seemingly put the game out of reach. With his two-hit attack, the 30-year-old infielder is now hitting .288/.333/.358 with one homer, 17 RBI and nine stolen bases on the season.

Although he’s homered just once, Kiner-Falefa has probably been the Pirates’ best position player this year after factoring in defense. He’s hitting .310/.356/.393, and he’s been perfectly solid at short after mostly playing the outfield in 2013 and second base and third base for the Jays last year. With that versatility sure to be valued, he’ll net the Pirates a nice prospect next month.

Kiner-Falefa grounded into a double play in his first at-bat and then went on to have probably his best offensive day of the season. He also had a three-run double last night, so he has five RBI in two games after collecting a total of eight his first 43 games. It’s the first time he’s scored three runs in a game since the Pirates acquired him last summer and eighth time overall.

Kiner-Falefa will need to miss at least a week with the strain. The 30-year-old shortstop will work his way back while Jared Triolo gets the majority of the starts at shortstop in his absence.

Kiner-Falefa will miss his third straight contest as he continues to deal with an ongoing lower-body issue. The Pirates haven’t divulged any additional information on his status to this point. It’ll be Jared Triolo drawing another start at shortstop in his absence.

Pirates’ skipper Derek Shelton didn’t have much more information on it, other than to say it’s something that the veteran infielder has been battling for a while. He also noted that’s the reason the team added Liover Peguero to the roster on Friday, to give them some extra depth in the infield. Kiner-Falefa should be considered day-to-day.
