Kahnle came on with the Tigers and Rangers locked in a scoreless battle in the bottom of the eighth inning. He proceeded to allow a double to Kyle Higashioka a walk to Josh Smith and then a two-run double to Corey Seager that proved to be the difference in the ballgame. After posting a 1.77 ERA through June, Kahnle has now allowed 14 runs over his last 3 1/3 innings of work, causing that ERA to balloon to 4.85.

Will Vest appeared to be unavailable tonight after throwing 32 pitches the previous two days. Pitching in a 1-0 game, Kahnle walked a batter with two outs, but he retired the other three guys he faced. He’ll likely get to rest Sunday after working back-to-back days, but West should be back if there’s a save chance.

Single, walk, single, triple, double. That’s how it went against Kahnle on a rare off night that took his ERA from 1.77 to 3.03. At least the one good thing here is that we know he wasn’t tipping his pitch.

It was Kahnle rather than Will Vest who came on to get this save. Yet, that’s likely because Vest came into this game in the seventh inning to face the top of the White Sox lineup and stayed on to pitch the eighth. He struck out three without allowing a base runner before Kahnle shut the door. In classic Kahnle fashion, he threw seven pitches and they were all changeups. Vest seems to still be first in line for saves in Detroit with Kahnle mixing in when the moment is right.

Will Vest was unavailable after throwing the previous two days. When Kahnle came in for the eighth, we were left trying to guess who would wind up closing it out for the Tigers. Kahnle for two, though, was obviously the plan all along, and he got six outs for the second time this season while throwing only 17 pitches, 15 of them strikes. It’s his seventh save.

Tigers’ manger A.J. Hinch called upon Will Vest to face the heart of the Cardinals’ lineup with the score tied in the eighth inning, leaving Kahnle to handle the ninth after the Tigers scored in the top half of the frame. Kahnle needed just 12 pitches (eight strikes) to retire the Cardinals in order — getting Victor Scott II on strikes, Lars Nootbaar on a fly ball to center and Masyn Winn on a fly out to left to end it. He has been spectacular for the Tigers this season, registering a 1.37 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and a 20/6 K/BB ratio over 19 2/3 innings to go with his six saves.

Just as it looked like Will Vest might run away with the closer’s role, Kahnle seems back in position now. He probably would have gotten the call Tuesday, when Vest was used in the sixth inning and gave up three runs in blowing a lead. Since he didn’t end up pitching in that loss, he was available to get four outs today. Kahnle should be effective enough to close, but there are workload concerns for a 35-year-old reliever who last put in a full season six years ago. We’d take Vest over him for the rest of the season, but if Kahnle was dropped in your league, he’s a decent enough option for now.

It didn’t look like Kahnle would be needed in this one — especially after recording the final six outs on Thursday night — as the Tigers carried a 7-1 lead into the ninth inning. When Kenta Maeda gave up a run though and loaded the bases with one out, Tigers’ skipper A.J. Hinch went to his stopper to get him out of trouble. Kahnle issued a walk to Michael Massey to force in a run but bounced back to get Cavan Biggio on strikes and Drew Waters on a line drive to right field to end it. He has converted each of his first four save chances while posting a 1.17 ERA and a 6/1 K/BB ratio over 7 2/3 innings.

It looked as though Tigers’ skipper A.J. Hinch had wanted to save Kahnle for the ninth inning, but he was called upon earlier after Beau Brieske allowed a run to score and had two men on and no one out in the eighth. Kahnle then needed just five pitches to escape trouble — getting Hunter Renfroe to ground into a double play and Drew Waters to ground out to shortstop. So he returned for the ninth and worked a scoreless inning to close it out. People keep saying that the Tigers’ bullpen has been a mess, but those truly paying attention have seen that Kahnle has been operating as a traditional closer since the first weekend of the season. He has made good on each of his first three save chances while posting a 1.29 ERA and 5/0 K/BB ratio over seven innings.

Kahnle made things interesting by allowing a one-out single to Trevor Larnach and a two-out infield single to Edouard Julien. He then surrendered an RBI ground ball single to Ty France that trimmed the lead to one run before ralling to get Mickey Gasper on a ground ball to first to end it. Kahnle has allowed just one run through his first five innings on the season while registering a 5/0 K/BB ratio. While many have speculated that the Tigers’ bullpen will be full of chaos in 2025, it has been Kahnle that has emerged in a traditional closer’s role to open the season. He’s worth a look in any fantasy leagues where he may still be hanging around on the waiver wire.
