Valenzuela has been summoned to the majors for the first time to bolster Toronto’s catching situation with starter Alejandro Kirk hitting the shelf with a fractured left thumb. It’s the first call-up for the 25-year-old backstop after coming over from the Padres in the Will Wagner trade last July. He’ll serve as veteran Tyler Heineman’s caddy while Kirk is on the injured list.

Valenzuela, who was the return from the Padres for Will Wagner at the deadline, would have become a minor league free agent later today. The backstop hit .224/.309/.383 between the Padres’ Double-A affiliate and Buffalo last season. He might take over as Alejandro Kirk’s backup at some point, but the Jays will stick with Tyler Heineman there next season.

The 24-year-old backstop had spent the entire season thus far at Double-A San Antonio where he was slashing .229/.313/.387 with 12 homers, 46 RBI and six stolen bases. He’ll add catching depth in the upper levels of the minors for the Blue Jays.
