Loperfido will remain in the minors after wrapping up a rehab assignment. The 26-year-old has been out recovering from a quad strain since mid-April. Houston will roll with Zach Cole, Brice Matthews, Dustin Harris and Shay Whitcomb in a semi-rotation between a pair of outfield spots next to Cam Smith.

As expected, Loperfido will be sidelined for at least a week while he continues to work his way through a right quad strain. Dustin Harris joined the Astros on Sunday to take Loperfido’s spot on the active roster.

Loperfido was held out Saturday with his quad injury, and the 26-year-old will likely need to miss a week-plus due to the injury. A corresponding move will be announced Sunday before the game against St. Louis.

Loperfido will get some additional time off to rest and recover after leaving Friday’s game with right quad tightness. Yordan Alvarez heads out to patrol left field in his absence.

“I’m not super concerned about it,” he said. “I obviously want to be on the field helping us win. Just going to get it looked at and kind of go from there.” Brice Matthews is more likely to play if Loperfido can’t go Saturday.

Loperfido knocked a base hit in the first inning, drew a walk in the third, then doubled to score a run in the fourth. He singled in the sixth to drive in his second RBI and scored his second run in the inning. Loperfido would walk in the ninth to reach base for the fifth time in the team’s 11-0 blowout win. The 26-year-old outfielder has been limited to starts against right-handed pitching, but has taken advantage going 8-for-22 (.364).

As a team, the Astros were only able to muster three hits against Jose Soriano and company, with Loperfido accounting for two of them personally. He smacked a one-out single in the second inning and a two-out double in the sixth, but the Astros were unable to cash him in either time. Loperfido started in left field and batted fifth for the Astros in this one, which is probably what we can expect going forward when the Astros are facing a right-handed starter.

Loperfido drove in a run with an RBI ground out in the third inning that pulled the Astros to within a run at 3-2. He has had a solid spring in his return to the Astros, hitting .351 (13-for-37) with a homer, six RBI and three stolen bases. He’s set to see regular action against right-handed pitching and makes for an interesting post-hype sleeper as a late-round option in mixed league drafts.

Loperfido now has seven walks to just six strikeouts this spring, which is certainly something to note from a player with a 4.6 percent career MLB walk rate and 33.3 percent career MLB strikeout rate. He also has two steals this spring while hitting .355/.474/.484 in 14 games. He will start against all right-handed pitching and could be worth a flyer late in drafts in case this plate discipline carries over.

Loperfido’s lone out was actually his hardest-hit ball today, traveling 371 feet with a 108.2-mph exit velocity. He’s 6-for-22 with four walks and two steals this spring as he tries to make the Astros as a platoon outfielder. Whether the Astros carry both he and fellow lefty Zach Cole will probably come down to how often they intend to use Yordan Alvarez in the outfield.

Loperfido has been an interesting young slugger for a couple seasons now but he’s probably going to strike out too often to be an everyday player. The 26-year-old former top prospect makes sense for Houston in a platoon role against right-handed pitching. It caps his realistic fantasy upside but it gives him a chance at sustained success, which is probably the more important variable at this stage of his career.

Loperfido was originally an Astros prospect but was traded to Toronto in 2024 as part of the Yusei Kikuchi deal. He is now back in Houston after hitting .333/.379/.500 with four home runs in 104 plate appearances for the Blue Jays last year. Loperfido also cut his strikeout rate to 21.4 percent in 91 Triple-A games in 2025 after posting a 28 percent mark in Triple-A in 2024. Improved plate discipline would help Loperfido utilize his plus raw power, and there’s a real chance that Houston gives him a chance to be their starting left fielder against right-handed pitching.

Loperfido had started both games since being recalled from Triple-A on Tuesday, but had gone 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. David Schneider will get the start in left field and bat seventh on Thursday.

Even though he’s managed just a .743 OPS in Triple-A, Loperfido has been great in limited action for the Blue Jays this season, hitting .358/.409/.507 in 89 plate appearances. He might steal away some time from the slumping Addison Barger in the outfield.

Loperfido heads back to the minors with veteran George Springer coming off the injured list for Saturday’s showdown against the Rangers. The 26-year-old has struggled against left-handed pitching and the Blue Jays need to pare down their outfield mix before he’s able to carve out an everyday role.

This is interesting because the Blue Jays are resting Nathan Lukes, Daulton Varsho, and Andres Gimenez with left-hander Matthew Boyd on the mound, yet Loperfido still finds himself in the lineup. There is a bit of a logjam in the Blue Jays lineup at the moment, but Loperfido has hit .372/.417/.526 in 28 games since being called up and deserves to stay in the lineup. Myles Straw will start in centerfield for Varsho, and Davis Schneider will start in left field for Lukes.

Even if he was fully healthy, it’s possible that Loperfido would be sitting against Dodgers’ veteran left-hander Clayton Kershaw. The more encouraging sign is that he hasn’t landed on the injured list, meaning that the Jays think that he’s nearing a return. Expect him back in the lineup before the weekend series is through.

No surprise here after Loperfido was drilled by a 98-mph fastball on the outside of the right knee during Tuesday’s contest at Coors Field. X-rays came back negative for any fractures, but he’s likely going to need a couple days for the pain and swelling to subside.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider confirmed following Tuesday’s contest that Loperfido managed to avoid serious injury. He appeared to be in a considerable amount of pain after being drilled on the outside of the right knee by a 98-mph fastball. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him get a couple days off to rest and recover.

Loperfido had to be helped off the field after being hit on the outside of the right knee by a 98-mph fastball from Rockies reliever Angel Chivilli. The 26-year-old outfielder will undergo evaluation and imaging to determine the severity of the issue. There should be an update on his status following the contest.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters that Loperfido jammed his left thumb during the early stages of Tuesday’s doubleheader at Camden Yards. There’s a possibility he sits out the nightcap out of an abundance of caution, but it sounds like he’ll avoid a trip to the injured list.

Loperfido finished the game despite hurting his left hand while being thrown out at home in the fourth. It later appeared to be a factor when he appeared to make a great sliding catch in left field but just couldn’t squeeze his glove tight enough to hold on to the ball. Nevertheless, he went on to homer in the eighth inning anyway.

Loperfido followed Ernie Clement’s go-ahead three-run blast with a 394-foot (107.2 mph EV) solo shot to right that increased the Jays’ lead to 5-1. The 26-year-old has done a nice job in his limited action with the big league club this season, slashing .324/.361/.529 with two homers and seven RBI in his first 36 plate appearances.

Loperfido came off the bench as a pinch-hitter during Saturday’s contest out in West Sacramento after being scratched from Friday’s lineup due to illness. The 26-year-old outfielder should be ready to roll once next week’s All-Star break wraps up.

The 26-year-old outfielder attempted to give it a go, but felt ill once again on Friday evening so the Jays made the wise decision to pull him from the lineup. Myles Straw will start in his place in left field and will bat ninth for the Blue Jays against Luis Severino and the Athletics on Friday evening in West Sacramento.

Loperfido has now started four straight games since being called up from Triple-A and is 5-for-11 in his first three games with one home run, one run, five RBI, and two strikeouts. The 26-year-old drastically reduced his strikeout rate in Triple-A this season thanks to a more selective approach. He still swings and misses a little more than you’d like, but he has the power to make up for it and that could make him an intriguing gamble in deeper formats right now.

Loperfido’s .278/.354/.422 line in Triple-A was pretty uninspiring, but he did seem to be heating up just before the promotion Sunday, and now he’s 3-for-7 with a homer for the Jays after going deep just six times in 315 plate appearances for Buffalo. He’ll probably play regularly through the All-Star break, but he could be replaced by Daulton Varsho afterwards. The Jays also hope to have Anthony Santander back at some point.

Loperfido rejoins Toronto’s outfield mix with Andrés Giménez going on the injured list with an ankle sprain. The 26-year-old hit .214/.264/.350 with four homers and four steals in 81 games in the big leagues last season.
