Lorenzen was shelled for seven runs against the Astros on Tuesday — although three of them were unearned — and it was beyond reasonable to be skeptical about his chances of limiting the Dodgers on Sunday. He did, for the most part. He gave up two runs in the second inning, and one more in the sixth, but all things considered, the disaster was averted. He’s now the owner of a 7.48 ERA and Lorenzen will get a chance to build on this decent-ish effort against the Mets on Friday.

Lorenzen tossed a clean first inning, then a solo homer by Christian Walker in the second. The wheels fell off in the third as Lorenzen would be chased after four hits, a walk, and two errors put six runs on the board for the Astros. He struck out three. The 34-year-old right-hander departed with a 9.18 ERA, 2.22 WHIP, and a 13/5 K/BB ratio across 16 2/3 innings. Don’t expect much better when he takes on the Dodgers in Colorado on Sunday.

That’s a rare sweep for Colorado after the Rockies won 9-7 and 5-1 the previous two days. Lorenzen, who allowed seven hits and struck out four, got his first win for his new franchise after entering with a 14.73 ERA in two starts. He’ll face the Astros again next week in Houston.

Not the worst outing by a pitcher today, at least. Plus, the Rockies saved their pen with Vicente Bellozo pitching six innings of one-run ball after relieving Lorenzen. The nine runs and 12 hits allowed were both career highs for Lorenzen. He’d given up eight runs twice. One of those was in 2015 when he was pitching for the Reds in Coors Field, which is where today’s game took place. The other time was in 2022 in Houston, which is where he’s due to make his next start next week.

Lorenzen escaped a bases-loaded jam in the second inning, then gave up one run on two hits and a sac fly in the third. Liam Hicks later took him deep for a two-run blast to tie the game at three in the fifth. That would end Lorenzen’s day at 93 pitches. He scattered seven total hits and struck out four batters. The 34-year-old right-hander will take on the Phillies in Colorado on Friday and could be ignored for fantasy purposes.

Five innings of four-run baseball might as well be called a Michael Lorenzen. The right-hander walked a trio while striking out three, and two of the hits he allowed went over the fence. Lorenzen is set to open the season as the Rockies’ No. 2 starter, and that’s just kinda sad, isn’t it?

That would line up Aaron Nola to pitch in the finals against the winner of the United States and the Dominican Republic should Italy’s magical run continue. Lorenzen was exceptional his last time out against Team USA, hurling 4 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball. He’ll be opposed by Keider Montero for Venezuela.

Working on a pitch limit of 65, Lorenzen, last seen giving up four runs in 2 2/3 innings against the Brewers last week, was able to retire 14 batters, an extremely impressive accomplishment even if Team USA didn’t field its best lineup tonight. Lorenzen allowed two hits, walked one and struck out two. He’ll be able to pitch again if Team Italy can reach the semifinals.

Lorenzen also issued a pair of walks in the ballgame while punching out a pair. The Brewers jumped on him right out of the gate as Garrett Mitchell slugged a leadoff home run and Luis Rengifo added a run-scoring single. They tacked on single runs in the second and third innings before the veteran right-hander was mercifully pulled. He got seven whiffs on 65 pitches on the day — four of those on his sinker — while posting a CSW of 28 percent. He’s likely to crack the Rockies’ Opening Day rotation, but Lorenzen should be avoided in all fantasy leagues unless you’re streaming against him.

Lorenzen struggled to find the zone, as he issued four walks against zero strikeouts. The 34-year-old was signed to eat innings in January, and he offers zero fantasy upside for the 2026 season or any season after that.

The deal was reported on January 7th and is now official. The 34-year-old had a 4.64 ERA in 141 2/3 innings last season and no longer has the groundball profile we’d like to see in a pitcher going to Colorado. This seems like a situation to avoid in fantasy leagues.
