The Astros will roll the dice on Maldonado after he posted a lackluster 7.20 ERA across 25 innings over 22 appearances between the Athletics and Marlins over the past two seasons. The 27-year-old righty has missed plenty of bats in the upper minors but it hasn’t translated to sustained success at the highest level. He’ll compete for a spot in Houston’s bullpen next spring.

Maldonado made 16 appearances for the Marlins during the 2024 season where he registered a 5.68 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and an 11/7 K/BB ratio over 19 innings. He has been outstanding to start the season at Triple-A Las Vegas, with a 0.73 ERA, 0.65 WHIP and a 17/2 K/BB ratio in 12 1/3 frames. He’ll function in middle relief for A’s skipper Mark Kotsay.
