Pirates hired Bill Murphy as their new pitching coach

Murphy had been the top assistant pitching coach for the Astros, working closely alongside pitching coach Josh Miller. The 36-year-old Murphy has spent his entire professional career with the Astros, starting as a Rookie Ball pitching coach in 2016 and then rising to their pitching coordinator in 2019 and assistant pitching coach in 2021. He was then elevated to be one of the team’s top two MLB pitching coaches before the 2022 season. Murphy had previously worked under Brent Strom, who was the Pirates’ assistant pitching coach in 2025. The Pirates began the offseason by moving on from both Strom and pitching coach Oscar Marin, and will now turn the reins over to Murphy.
