An apparent reward for opening the month 13-for-24. It’s Marsh’s first start against a lefty since Harrison Bader was acquired and just his eighth of the season. He’s being picked over Bryson Stott, with Weston Wilson playing second base rather than left field.

This certainly explains why Nick Castellanos is getting the nod to face Mets rookie right-hander Nolan McLean. Marsh should return to Philadelphia’s lineup at some point this week once he’s feeling better.

Unless Marsh is hurting, this seems like madness. The Phillies are facing a righty tonight, and Marsh just went 6-for-15 with a homer and three doubles in the series against the Marlins. He’s batting .485 with two homers in his last nine games.

Marsh got the Phillies on the board first with his 372-foot (98.5 mph EV) solo shot off of Hurston Waldrep in the fourth inning. That would wind up being the Phillies’ only run in the ballgame. Marsh has picked up the pace offensively over the past month and is now slashing a respectable .267/.329/.408 with eight homers and 30 RBI in 350 plate appearances on the season.

This one shouldn’t have been so close, given that the Phillies outhit the Cubs 12-4 in regulation and 16-5 by game’s end. Some baserunning mistakes set them back, though. Marsh was out of the lineup against a lefty, as per usual, but he entered the game in the seventh and wound up with his first career walkoff hit with the bases loaded and no outs in the 11th. He was facing just a two-man outfield at the time, but his shot to center left the bat at 105 mph and traveled 380 feet; even if Pete Crow-Armstrong had been playing straight up, he probably wouldn’t have been able to get to it.

Marsh drove in the only run of the day on a groundball to shortstop in the fifth inning. The 27-year-old came off the IL on May 3rd and is now 9-for-28 (.321) in the month with four RBI and four extra base hits. He will play every day against right-handed pitchers and makes for a solid add in deeper formats.

It’s unusual to see Marsh sitting against an opposing right-hander, but perhaps it’s just the Phillies’ way of easing him back into full-time action following his return from the injured list. Johan Rojas will start in his place in center field and bat ninth against Luis L. Ortiz on Sunday evening.

Marsh didn’t waste any time, smacking the first pitch that Manuel Rodriguez threw in the 10th inning for a go-ahead RBI double into left field. He then came around to score what would stand as the winning run on an RBI knock by Trea Turner. Marsh also singled and scored on Bryson Stott’s three-run blast in the eighth inning. The 27-year-old outfielder finished the night 2-for-4 and is now hitting .170/.274/.264 with one homer, seven RBI and zero stolen bases through his first 22 games on the season.

Marsh will hit second and play center field to begin his rehab assignment. The 27-year-old will likely need a few games in the minors, and assuming there’s no setback, he could be back in the Phillies’ lineup by the end of April or the very beginning of May.

It’s not a bad idea for Marsh to spend some extra time away from the diamond right now since he’s been ice-cold at the dish this season, hitting .095 (4-for-42) with one homer and five RBI in 17 games. It’ll be Johan Rojas taking over as Philadelphia’s primary center field in his absence.

Marsh reportedly tweaked his knee while chasing a ball out in center field, and he’ll meet with team doctors. Knee issues have been a problem for the 27-year-old in the past, so there’s a bit of added reason for concern. His status should be updated before Friday’s contest, but for now, Johan Rojas will handle center for the Phillies in Marsh’s absence.

It’s a much-needed mental reset for Marsh, who has gone hitless in his last 26 at-bats. The 27-year-old is batting .108 (4-for-37) with one homer through 14 games. Hopefully the extra time off results in a fresh start. It’ll be Johan Rojas getting some extra playing time over the next couple days.
