Mlodzinski got the job done, but that he allowed 11 hard-hit balls and generated whiffs on just three of 33 swings while striking out one was pretty discouraging. He fell to 2-3 with a 4.50 ERA through 40 innings. There’s a good chance he’ll wind up back in the pen at some point before the season is out, but he’ll definitely keep starting for now and he’s got a very tasty matchup at home next week against the Rockies.

Mlodzinski surrendered two runs in the first inning on a walk and two doubles. A solo homer by Will Benson brought in a third run before he stranded the bases loaded in the second inning. Mlodzinski tossed a clean third, striking out the side. He gave up one run on two hits in the fifth and left with a runner on and two outs in the sixth. The inherited runner would come in to score. Mlodzinski struck out ten on 17 whiffs. The 27-year-old right-hander will carry a 4.50 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, and a 40/13 K/BB ratio across 34 innings into a start against the Giants in San Francisco next Friday.

Mlodzinski gave up five hits, only two of which came on hard-hit balls, and he wasn’t helped by Joey Bart allowing Sal Frelick to reach on catcher’s interference. Mlodzinski also surrendered five runs last time out, so his ERA has jumped from 1.77 to 4.13 over the last week. He still hasn’t given up a homer this season and he’s fanned 30 in 28 1/3 innings, so he definitely deserves to keep his rotation spot. He’s an option in deeper leagues at home against the Reds next weekend.

Mlodzinski came back to earth here after a phenomenal first handful of starts. It took until the fifth inning for the Rangers to really tack on, but they were hitting rockets all night. His splitter had been his bread and butter so far this season and while it forced seven of his nine total swings-and-misses, he struggled to command it. That left too many over the middle of the plate and a handful turned into hits and then runs. He’ll have a chance to get back on track this Sunday against the Brewers.

Following Mason Montgomery as an opener, Mlodzinski was stellar in a bulk role. His command was especially impressive, living on the edges and not giving the Nationals anything to hit. Against a mostly left-handed lineup, he was really able to lean on his splitter and seemed to put it exactly where he wanted every time he threw it. He’s had a great start to the season with a 1.77 ERA along with a 20:8 K:BB ratio through 20 1/3 innings as he’s increased the usage of that splitter. He’s lineup up for a two-start (or two-bulk-appearance) week against the Rangers and Brewers coming up.

The 27-year-old right-hander also issued three free passes on the day while recording a pair of strikeouts. It wasn’t nearly as efficient as Shota Imanaga who fired six no-hit innings on the other side of the diamond, but Mlodzinski was able to work himself out of any jams that he got into and kept the Cubs’ offense off the board just the same. He got just three whiffs on 81 pitches on the day, posting a CSW of 25 percent. He’ll tote a 2.51 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and a 15/6 K/BB ratio (14 1/3 innings) into a nice matchup against the Nationals at home on Wednesday.

Mlodzinski worked three scoreless innings before running into some trouble in the fourth as the Orioles put two runs on the board with four hits and a walk. He issued his third walk in the fifth and would end his day with two outs in the inning at 84 pitches -- 49 for strikes. His velocity was up to 95.6 mph, an uptick from 94.4 mph his first time out. And he collected five strikeouts. The challenge for the 27-year-old right-hander is going deep enough into games, as he’s exited in the fifth in each of his starts so far. Mlodzinski will face another tough test when he takes on the Cubs in Chicago on Friday.

Mlodzinski, who struck out eight, was working with a 2-1 lead in the fifth when he gave up a Francisco Lindor triple and a Juan Soto RBI single with one out. That brought his afternoon to an end. Still, it was a nice showing, especially with him notching eight strikeouts. His previous high in 17 career starts was six. Mlodzinski would have a better chance of making a fantasy impact as a late-game reliever than as a starter, but he has a chance to be a useful bottom-of-the-rotation guy for Pittsburgh, especially if his control holds up. His 6.4 percent walk rate last year was a big improvement over anything he’d ever done in the majors or the minors. He’ll face Baltimore on Saturday.

The 27-year-old right-hander will make his first start on Sunday against the Mets. Mlodzinski did a nice job during Grapefruit League play, registering a 2.92 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and a 14/2 K/BB ratio over 12 1/3 innings of work. It’s possible that he could carve out some fantasy value in deeper mixed leagues if he holds onto that rotation spot.

Mlodzinski has a 2.45 ERA and a 9/2 K/BB in 7 1/3 innings. He should have a spot in the Pittsburgh pen if he fails to make the rotation, but starting is the goal. Last year, he had a 3.55 ERA in his 12 starts and 22 relief appearances.

Mlodzinski was making his first major league start since May. He opened the season in the Pirates rotation, but he was sent to the minors after going 1-4 with a 5.67 ERA in nine turns. Since being brought back, he had a 2.55 ERA and a 34/8 K/BB in 35 1/3 innings out of the pen, earning him another chance. Ultimately, Mlodzinski probably will wind up back in the pen, but he could finish out this season as a starter if the Pirates want. He’ll face the Rockies next weekend if he remains in the rotation.

Mlodzinski has been able to work multiple innings out of the bullpen, so he should be able to handle a few frames before giving way to a pitcher. One of those hurlers could be Andrew Heaney with Heaney being demoted to the bullpen earlier in the week.

It would have been a save if Mike Burrows had gotten two more outs, but Burrows was ineligible for the win after being pulled with a 6-1 lead in the fifth. Mlodzinski has a 3.09 ERA in 11 2/3 innings of relief work since being recalled earlier this month.

The Pittsburgh Gazette’s Noah Hiles reports that Mlodzinski will be used as a bulk reliever, similar to the role Braxton Ashcraft has right now. It’s a role that the 26-year-old has handled well so far in his career. Having both Mlodzinski and Ashcraft pitching multiple innings out of the bullpen means that the Pirates’ starting pitchers may not be pushed as deep into games.

Those waiting for Bubba Chandler to take Mlodzinski’s spot in the rotation may need to wait a bit longer. The 26-year-old still has a 5.20 ERA on the season, but he was good enough on Sunday, with an 18 percent whiff rate and 25 percent CSW on the day. He should not be added in any fantasy formats.

For the second start in a row and the fourth time in five outings, Mlodzinski was unable to work past the fifth inning. The 26-year-old didn’t walk anyone, but still needed 88 pitches — 53 of them strikes — to get his 14 outs. Mlodzinski should be avoided if at all possible when he faces Atlanta on Sunday. That’s more of an indictment on the right-handed hurler than a compliment to the Atlanta offense.

Mlodzinski just doesn’t have a good enough approach at this point to face a major league lineup for a third time. His fastball doesn’t miss many bats and he’s unwilling to mix his secondary pitches enough against left-handed hitters. So, it winds up being a lot of back-door sweepers against them and then hoping for the best. That’s how one winds up with a 6.58 ERA through six starts. His place in this rotation could become tenuous with some exciting pitching prospects in the Pirates’ system.

Mlodzinski scattered five hits, and he struck out four while allowing one walk. The 26-year-old didn’t give up a run for the the first three frames, but scuffled in the fourth, giving up a three-spot highlighted by a two-run homer by Logan O’Hoppe. The start ‘lowers’ his ERA to 6.95, and he shouldn’t be on fantasy rosters for his scheduled bout against the Cubs next week.

It might be time to end this and send Mlodzinski back to the pen, where he’s likely to prove more helpful to the Pirates’ cause. After giving up nine hits tonight, his ERA stands at 7.41 ERA through four starts. The stuff just isn’t quite there to get through a lineup a second or especially a third time.

The right-hander also walked two and struck out four while posting a 30 percent whiff rate and 34 percent CSW. His sweeper and slider combination helped him to miss bats, and he did get 17 called strikes on the day, but he also gave up some hard contact and will now bring a 6.23 ERA into a start next week against Cleveland. You have to wonder when Bubba Chandler gets a chance.
