It’s merely a procedural move at this point with McDermott expected to miss the final week of the regular season with a back issue. The 27-year-old pitching prospect was lit up for a staggering 15 runs over 8 2/3 innings during four appearances (one start) this season at the highest level.

McDermott will miss a minimum of three games and up to a week. Jose Espada was recalled to take McDermott’s place while the latter takes care of more important things than baseball.

McDermott provides Baltimore with some additional long relief depth heading into a three-game series against the White Sox. The 27-year-old pitching prospect last appeared in the big leagues back in late May when he was hit extremely hard in a pair of spot starts. He can be safely ignored in most fantasy formats.

The 26-year-old right-hander struggled badly with his command in this one, issuing five walks while throwing only 37 of his 75 pitches for strikes. He punched out two batters in the game. All of the damage came via the long ball, with Brice Turang smacking a solo shot in the third inning and Sal Frelick adding a two-run blast in the fourth. McDermott got just three swings and misses on 75 pitches on the evening, posting an underwhelming CSW of 24 percent. It’s unclear if he’ll stick around to make another start for the O’s or if he’ll head back to Triple-A Norfolk for additional seasoning. If he does get another opportunity, it would come in a tough spot against the Red Sox at Fenway Park on Sunday.

McDermott will pitch as a bulk guy behind Keegan Akin tonight against the Brewers. It’ll be his second big-league outing this season after he gave up four runs over three innings in a doubleheader game against the Twins last week.

McDermott will take the ball following opener Keegan Akin for his second start of the season. The 26-year-old righty allowed four runs over three innings last Wednesday in his season debut. He’s one of the better pitching prospects in Baltimore’s system and probably deserves a shot in the rotation given their issues.
