It’s an unfortunate end to what was a very solid season for the 39-year-old hurler. Martin finishes the season with a 2.98 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and a 43/8 K/BB ratio across 42 1/3 innings in 49 appearances. Set to hit free agency at season’s end, it’s fair to wonder whether or not we have seen the last of Martin in the big leagues.

Martin returns to Texas’ high-leverage mix following a six-week absence recovering from a left calf strain. The 39-year-old setup specialist holds a strong 2.36 ERA across 34 1/3 innings (39 appearances) this season in his Rangers debut after spending the previous two years with the Red Sox.

The Rangers had been hopeful that the 39-year-old hurler was getting close to a return, but that will obviously change after Saturday’s setback. Expect another update on his status in the coming days as the Rangers gain more information.

Martin has been a key cog in Texas’ bullpen this season, but they’re going to be without him until at least mid-August. The 39-year-old setup specialist suffered the injury during Sunday’s relief appearance against the Tigers and has already been placed on the injured list.

The 39-year-old hurler suffered the injury while delivering a pitch in the eighth inning of Sunday’s battle against the Tigers. No word yet on the severity of the strain, but it sounds like a trip to the injured list could be in Martin’s future.

Martin appeared to twist his left ankle or knee while delivering a pitch in the eighth inning as he allowed a two-out RBI single to Matt Vierling that gave the Tigers the lead. He’ll head for further evaluation. Look for the Rangers to update his status as soon as more information becomes available.

Robert García is the closest thing the Rangers have to a closer right now, but he was off today after pitching Thursday and Friday. In stepped Martin to retire Adam Frazier, Henry Davis (on a 393-foot fly to center) and Ke’Bryan Hayes for his 16th career save. Now Martin will almost surely be off tomorrow after working back-to-back days.

The question now is whether Martin will be available Thursday. The right-hander recently returned from the injured list because of a shoulder issue, so the Rangers may take even more precaution with the 39-year-old.

The 39-year-old right-hander will take the place of Kumar Rocker on the Rangers’ active roster. Martin has been shelved since May 19 due to fatigue in his pitching shoulder. Prior to landing on the injured list, he had compiled a stellar 1.83 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and a 23/3 K/BB ratio over 19 2/3 innings of work while notching one save. He could push Robert Garcia for save chances once he settles back in.

If there’s a positive takeaway here it’s that Martin doesn’t appear likely to face an extended absence after leaving Sunday’s relief appearance against the Astros after throwing just one pitch. The 38-year-old veteran setup specialist figures to get some time off to rest and recover before rejoining Texas’ high-leverage mix.

Martin missed time earlier in the week due to soreness in his elbow. With the shoulder issue added on, it seems like a near certainty that he’ll spent some time on the injured list while the Rangers get him back to full health. Look for Shawn Armstrong to function as the primary setup option in front of Luke Jackson while Martin is shelved.

This didn’t look good at all. It’s seems like a virtual lock that Martin will require a trip to the injured list after leaving a relief appearance for the second time in less than one week due to injury. The 38-year-old veteran threw just one pitch before leaving with a trainer in his second outing since experiencing a right elbow scare on Tuesday night.
