Murphy is able to be recalled just two days after being demoted to the minors because Brennan Bernardino was placed on the 15-day injured list with a strained lat. Murphy will likely be a middle-inning option while he’s with Boston.

Murphy, 27, gets the boot from the active roster with Kyle Harrison brought up from Worcester in a corresponding move. Murphy could be back before the end of 2025, but there’s obviously no guarantee with less than three weeks to go in the regular season.

As anticipated, he’ll take the place of the injured Jordan Hicks (shoulder) in the Red Sox’ bullpen. Murphy has done a nice job in 14 appearances for the Red Sox this season, posting a 3.05 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and a 19/10 K/BB ratio across 20 2/3 innings of work. He’ll give manager Alex Cora another option to deploy in the middle innings.
