Martin passed through waivers unclaimed after being jettisoned from Chicago’s bullpen mix last week. The 30-year-old allowed six runs over five innings across seven appearances for the Cubs since April 18. He also picked up one save during that timeframe.

It’s third career save for Martin. He had two in the second half of last year for the Orioles before getting cut on Sept. 2 anyway. Obviously, the ninth inning is wide open in Chicago right now, with the Cubs down arguably their top four short relievers and preferring to keep Ben Brown in more of a multi-inning role. Still, we wouldn’t recommend picking up Martin, who has a 6.21 ERA in 79 2/3 major league innings since debuting with the D-backs in 2019.

Martin joins Chicago’s relief mix ahead of Saturday’s game against the Mets after spending a couple weeks down at Triple-A Iowa. The 30-year-old former top pitching prospect has bounced around between several organizations over the past few years, but made a career-high 17 relief appearances for the Orioles last year. He’ll operate in middle relief situations for Chicago.

Despite it being the final Sunday of spring training, there were no real surprises among this batch of cuts. The Cubs still have 38 players remaining in big league camp as they attempt to whittle down their roster in advance of Opening Day.

Chicago continues fortifying its relief mix with Martin representing their latest middle relief lottery ticket this offseason. The 30-year-old former top pitching prospect was the centerpiece of the Zack Greinke trade between the Astros and Diamondbacks in 2019 before injuries derailed his promising trajectory. He compiled an underwhelming 6.00 ERA — 5.30 FIP — and 23/9 K/BB ratio across 18 innings over 17 appearances for the Orioles this past season in his first big-league action since the 2022 campaign.

The 29-year-old hurler had been designated for assignment earlier in the week, but he passed through waivers unclaimed. He’ll continue to serve as extra bullpen depth for the O’s at the Triple-A level.

Striking out Bo Bichette to end it. Seranthony Domínguez probably would have been the Orioles’ closer tonight, but he was traded to the opposing team in between games and actually wound up working a scoreless seventh versus his very recent teammates. We’d say that puts Andrew Kittredge (another strong trade candidate) and Yennier Cano in line for saves in Baltimore, but Martin was the choice after Kittredge worked a scoreless eighth tonight (Cano pitched in game one), and he got through the ninth in spite of a HBP and a walk to start the inning. Martin has allowed just one run in six innings since rejoining the Orioles on July 18. Still, he has significant issues with home runs and walks, which is why he’s spent far more time in the minors than in the majors in recent years. He doesn’t come recommended at this point.

Martin was designated for assignment after the break, and he elected free agency after being sent outright to Triple-A Norfolk. The right-hander is back with Baltimore — for now — as a multi-inning option.

Martin was one of the better pitching prospects in the game roughly a half-decade ago, but his career has been derailed by serious injury. The 29-year-old righty was called up earlier this month by the Orioles and wound up making just one relief appearance for the club.

Martin will have a chance to make his debut with the Orioles, and make his first appearance in the majors since July 30, 2022. The former second-round pick will be a multi-inning option for Baltimore while he’s with the club.
