May deserves some credit for settling down after giving up runs in back-to-back frames to open the contest as he managed to keep the Cardinals within striking distance until they rallied in the ninth inning to take him off the hook. He finished with two strikeouts and issued a pair of walks. He’s allowed two earned runs or fewer in four consecutive starts since being shelled for 13 runs combined in his first two outings. He’ll take the ball on Sunday against the Dodgers to cap off a two-start week.

May struck out five and walked one. He’s now one of 23 major league pitchers with three wins, even though his ERA stands at 5.84, the league is hitting .337 against him and he’s averaging just less than five innings per start. He’ll face the Pirates next time out.

May struck out four and walked one, but posted just a six percent whiff rate and threw only 55 percent of his first-pitches for strikes. You might get away with streaming May next week against the Marlins, but it’s really hard to trust a pitcher in fantasy baseball who misses so few bats.

The 28-year-old right-hander struck out four batters on the night and did not allow a base on balls. The Red Sox scratched out a pair of runs against him in the second inning on a fielder’s choice, an error and Trevor Story stealing home on a double steal. That was the extent of the damage though as May turned in his best start of the season against his former club. He got seven whiffs on 75 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 32 percent. He’ll try to further improve upon his cringe-inducing 9.45 ERA and 1.80 WHIP when he takes on the Guardians at home on Wednesday.

Not great. May took a 104-mph line drive off his lower right left from Tigers leadoff man Colt Keith but was able to remain in the contest. That decision led to the floodgates opening with seven hits, including a pair of homers, before he was pulled in the fourth inning at 79 pitches. He served up a two-run homer to Kerry Carpenter as part of a 33-pitch opening frame and gave up a two-run blast to Zach McKinstry in the fourth before departing. He struck out four and handed out two walks. He’ll bring a preposterously high 15.95 ERA into a home outing against the Red Sox on Friday. He’s the definition of a stay-away for fantasy purposes.

May walked one batter on the afternoon while striking out three. The Rays scratched out three runs against him in the second inning, then added three more with three RBI doubles in the fourth inning. The 28-year-old hurler got just four swings and misses on 61 pitches on the day, posting a miserable CSW of 23 percent. He’ll try to put this one behind him and get back on track when he takes on the Tigers in Detroit on Saturday.

We don’t have any Statcast data since this contest took place at Double-A Hammons Field but May turned in a strong performance in his final tune-up before opening the season in St. Louis’ rotation. The 28-year-old figures to take the ball this weekend against the Rays at Busch Stadium. His immediate fantasy appeal is strictly limited to deeper formats until he strings together a handful of quality outings.

He also struck out three and walked one while posting a 20 percent whiff rate and 20 percent CSW. You rarely see a pitcher get just seven called strikes in five full innings of work, but that’s what May did today. The right-hander threw 55 strikes on the day today, and the Nationals swung at 46 of them. Perhaps Washington was simply being aggressive, or perhaps May wasn’t really fooling hitters, which might be why Washington had eight hard-hit balls. Regardless, he maintained his fastball velocity throughout the outing, which is good news. That puts him on the fantasy radar, but until we start seeing consistent whiffs, it’s hard to get too excited.

May also walked two and struck out three while registering a 23 percent whiff rate and 25 percent CSW. The command wasn’t ideal for May, who had just a 57 percent strike rate, but he had three whiffs on his four-seamer and two whiffs on four swings against his sweeper, which was nice to see. His four-seam velocity did drop about three mph in the fourth inning, but that’s not a huge shock in spring training. It’s hard to get overly excited about May this season since he is on a rebuilding team, and he has never produced much strikeout upside.

The good news is that he averaged 94.5 mph with the sinker, a 1.6 mph bump from last year. The bad news is he only struck out one batter and managed just one whiff on 16 swings against his two main pitches. Still, as far as Grapefruit League debuts go, it’s hard to wave away the results. May could be interesting this year if he maintains this level of velocity.

The mutual option is for $20 million, and contains a $500,000 buyout. May will get a chance to pitch in the middle of the St. Louis rotation after forging a 4.98 ERA and 123/56 K/BB in his 25 appearances and 132 1/3 innings with the Dodgers and Red Sox in 2025.

It’s unclear how much time May will miss, but the 28-year-old figures to be sidelined until the closing moments of the regular season. The 28-year-old righty has struggled to a bloated 5.40 ERA across 28 1/3 innings in six appearances (five starts) since coming over from the Dodgers at the trade deadline.

No word yet on what the injury is, but May had been set to start Tuesday’s game against the Athletics. It will now be Connelly Early making his MLB debut instead. May has thrown 132 1/3 innings this season, which is far and away the most of his career. His previous high was 56 innings back in 2020. The Red Sox had initially moved May into the bullpen a couple of weeks ago, but repeated injuries to their pitching staff have impacted their plans for his usage. They’re likely hoping this is not a long-term injury but just an opportunity to give him some rest.

May allowed an unearned run to score in the first inning on an error, base hit, and a groundout. After three scoreless innings, things unraveled in the fifth as he loaded the bases with no outs before the Pirates brought three runs in to score. Oneil Cruz added a run with a leadoff homer in the sixth. May would leave two runners on with one out in the inning, with both inherited runners eventually coming in to score. The 27-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 5.01 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, and a 122/54 K/BB ratio across 129 1/3 innings. He’s tentatively lined up to face the Diamondbacks in Arizona on Friday.

That means the Red Sox will need a starter for Friday. Manager Alex Cora said “everybody is in the mix” and Thursday’s game will dictate who starts. If Garrett Crochet can pitch deep into the game on Thursday, then the Red Sox could potentially use guys like Steven Matz or Brennan Bernardino in bulk on Friday. Otherwise, the team could potentially call up either Kyle Harrison or Peyton Tolle, who are the more exciting options.

There’s a lot going on with Boston’s rotation mix at the moment. The only certainty is that May will take the ball at some point on Friday or Saturday in the series. Top prospect Payton Tolle is making a bulk relief appearance on Friday for Triple-A Worcester with some combination of Kyle Harrison or Richard Fitts (biceps) in play to handle the other contest. It’s nearly impossible to speculate how the Red Sox are going to handle this quagmire with so many moving parts.

May also issued three walks on the evening while striking out three. Nearly all of the damage done against him came via the long ball as Jazz Chisholm Jr. socked a two-run dinger in the second inning then Trent Grisham added solo shots in the third and fifth. He got six swings and misses on 70 pitches in the ballgame, registering a CSW of 29 percent. Now 7-10 on the season, he’ll carry a 4.79 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and a 117/50 K/BB ratio (124 innings) into Friday’s matchup against the Pirates.

May allowed eight hits, his second-highest total of the year, but he spaced them around well enough to notch a second straight quality start. He’s not recommended in mixed leagues with a road start against the Yankees coming up on Sunday.

May made his best start since May in his second game with the Red Sox, holding the Astros scoreless over six innings. He scattered five hits and one walk while striking out eight batters. The 27-year-old right-hander will take a 4.67 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and a 109/45 K/BB ratio across 113 2/3 innings into a start against the Orioles in Boston on Monday.

May got through the first two innings here unscathed with three strikeouts and looked to be in control. Then, he began to allow some hard contact, lost his command, and was pulled before getting through four frames. We did see a bit of an adjustment from May though in his first start with the Red Sox: more cutters. He threw a season-high 30 percent cutters – previous high was 18 percent – and he took about two ticks off it. It forced five of his 11 total whiffs and is something to watch in his next scheduled start against the Astros in Houston.

The club had announced that May would be taking the ball on Sunday, but they didn’t want Lucas Giolito to have such a long layoff in between starts so he’ll make that start instead. That means that May could debut on Monday against the Royals, or he could appear out of the bullpen at some point and make his start the next time Criswell’s spot comes around in the rotation. Stay tuned.

The Red Sox are giving Cooper Criswell a spot start tonight, but the five-man rotation for now is likely Garrett Crochet, Brayan Bello, Lucas Giolito, Walker Buehler and May, A move to the pen could and probably should come for May at some point. He doesn’t seem like a very good option in mixed leagues.

Giving up two top 30 prospects in their system for two months of Dustin May has not landed well with Boston fans. The Red Sox needed starting pitching depth at the deadline, but the team had expressed a desire to land a top-of-the-rotation arm and instead got a starter with a 4.85 ERA and 97/43 K/BB ratio in 104 innings pitched. May has also never thrown more than 48 MLB innings in a season, so there is no telling how much stamina he has left for the remainder of this season. The Red Sox could keep him in the rotation or transition him into a bulk relief role, but it’s a pretty underwhelming return for what Boston gave up.

The Red Sox had been in discussions with the Twins regarding Joe Ryan and the Padres regarding Dylan Cease, but May becomes the first arm that they land prior to Thursday’s trade deadline. The 27-year-old right-hander was forced out of a crowded rotation mix in Los Angeles after posting a 4.85 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and a 97/43 K/BB ratio over 104 innings. No word yet on the return package heading to the Dodgers in the deal.

2024 first-round pick James Tibbs III, who was acquired from the Giants in the Rafael Devers deal, is going to the Dodgers, according to FanSided’s Robert Murray. May, a free agent at season’s end, was going to be the odd-man out of the Dodgers rotation here with Blake Snell back. He has a disappointing 4.85 ERA in 104 innings this season in his return from Tommy John, but there’s still a lot to like about his stuff. The Red Sox could treat him as a swingman or stick him in the pen on a permanent basis.

May struck out five and walked nobody, and was pitching well until he hung a slider that Alex Bregman deposited for a go-ahead two-run home run in the fifth inning. May has been inconsistent as a starter this season and may no longer have a rotation spot with Blake Snell (shoulder) set to come off the IL next week.

Rosenthal mentions that “sources briefed on the club’s thinking” believe that May could be used as a chip to get the Dodgers bullpen help since he’s “a potential free agent who could lose his spot in the rotation once left-hander Blake Snell comes off the injured list.” The Dodgers may choose to keep May as insurance for their beleaguered staff, and he’s unlikely to have much value as a rental who has already surpassed his career high in innings pitched for a season. However, this is a situation to monitor.

May came in after Shohei Ohtani pitched well over three innings, and he was able to keep the Twins off the board even while allowing five hits and three walks. That’s thanks in part to four strikeouts, and a marked improvement from his seven-run start against the Giants before the All-Star break. May will likely piggyback with Ohtani again against the Red Sox on Sunday.

May was excellent in his last outing against the White Sox. He did not face the White Sox on Friday. The 27-year-old gave up two homers, issued four walks, and threw just 49-of-86 pitches for strikes. He’ll enter the All-Star break with an unhealthy 4.96 ERA and 1.35 WHIP over 94 1/3 innings.
