Montas underwent Tommy John surgery in September, so it’s highly unlikely he was going to pitch in the majors at any point of 2026. This gets him off the 40-man, and the Mets will release him once he clears waivers. He’ll still get his $17 million salary in 2026.

This was a given. Montas is likely out for the entire 2026 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery at the end of August. He posted a 6.28 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, and a 32/14 K/BB ratio over 38 2/3 innings for the Mets. He will now spend 2026 with the team, trying to get healthy to land another free agent contract in 2027.

The expectation is that Montas will require the full Tommy John procedure, though that has yet to be confirmed. The 32-year-old hurler finishes his first year with the Mets with a miserable 6.28 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and a 32/14 K/BB ratio over 38 2/3 innings of work. He has a $17 million player option for the 2026 season that he’ll certainly exercise, though there’s no way that he’s going to make it back to pitch before the 2026 season concludes.

This officially ends Montas’s regular season. It sounds like he might require a procedure to address in ulnar collateral ligament, which would sideline him into 2026. Obviously, he won’t be exercising the opt out in his two-year, $34 million contract this winter.

There isn’t an official diagnosis from the Mets at this juncture, but UCL injuries typically lead to extended absences and often require reconstructive surgery. Montas was jettisoned from New York’s rotation mix earlier this month in favor of top prospect Nolan McLean. The 32-year-old veteran will be a free agent at the conclusion of the season.

The 32-year-old right-hander holds an uninspiring 6.38 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and a 32/12 K/BB ratio over 36 2/3 innings with the Mets this season. While he wouldn’t name Montas’ replacement in the rotation, the Mets have several arms on the injured list that are close to working their way back. Expect one of them to take the ball on Saturday against the Mariners.

The Mets opted to use Reed Garrett as an opener on Saturday, but that didn’t help Montas much. He allowed two hits, a walk, and two runs in the second inning, his first in the game. He threw 44 of his 72 pitches for strikes with a 29 percent whiff rate and 26 percent CSW, but needing 72 pitches to get through three innings is never a good sign. The Mets hit on a lot of their free-agent pitcher signings last year, but they have not been able to duplicate that this season. Montas is not a recommended play next week against the Mariners.

Mendoza added that the Mets are weighing the use of an opener ahead of Montas, who’s been lit up for 12 runs over just 8 1/3 innings in his last two starts. The 32-year-old righty is still on track to take the ball Saturday against the Brewers, but his recent struggles could open the door for a top pitching prospect like Jonah Tong, Nolan McLean or Brandon Sproat to get a look later this season.

Montas gave up seven hits, walked two and struck out three. The 32-year-old right-hander’s struggles in a Mets’ uniform continued as he allowed at least five runs for the third time in his last six starts. Montas has a 6.68 ERA and 29/10 K/BB ratio in 33 2/3 innings this year. His 4.31 xFIP indicates he hasn’t been quite that bad, but that doesn’t make him a recommended fantasy option. He’s lined up to face the Brewers on the road next weekend.

The 32-year-old hurler scattered eight hits and a pair of walks on the evening. Despite the parade of baserunners, he was able to limit the damage to a solo blast from Jorge Soler in the second inning and an RBI double off the bat of Nolan Schanuel in the fifth. Montas generated 12 whiffs on 91 pitches on the night — five of them on his splitter — while registering a solid CSW of 31 percent. Now 3-1 on the season, he’ll tote a 4.62 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and a 23/6 K/BB ratio (25 1/3 innings) into Monday’s matchup against the Padres in San Diego.

Montas had an excellent outing after giving up ten runs over his last two starts. He held the Royals off the board through five innings before a pair of doubles brought a run in to start the sixth. That would end the day for Montas at 83 pitches with five strikeouts. The 32-year-old right-hander holds a 5.03 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and a 17/4 K/BB ratio across 19 2/3 innings.

Montas settled for only two strikeouts today, but he walked none and both homers he gave up were solo shots. That worked out just fine on a day in which the Mets scored four runs in the first and 12 runs overall. Montas is now 1-1 with a 6.14 ERA in three starts since returning from his lat injury. He’ll face the Royals next time out.

Montas surprised everyone by throwing five scoreless innings against the Braves in his season debut Tuesday, but today’s outing looked a lot more like the ones he experienced while rehabbing his strained lat. He did strike out five and get 17 whiffs, so that’s pretty good. However, with his velocity down 1.2 mph from Tuesday, eight of the 14 balls in play against were hit hard and two became homers. Montas is scheduled to face the Yankees next.

The Braves are that much worse than Triple-A teams, eh? Montas, who gave up eight homers and had a 12.05 ERA in 18 2/3 innings on his rehab assignment, had an extra shot of adrenaline tonight; his 96.2-mph average on his fastball was up 1.2 mph from his Tripel-A starts and up 0.6 mph from his 2024 average. He wound up allowing three hits, walking three and striking out five. We still don’t suggest trusting him in mixed leagues, even if it’s tempting to stream him Sunday in a matchup against the Pirates.

For better or worse, Montas, who went down with a strained lat in February, will make his Mets debut tonight against the Braves. He finished a six-start rehab stint with a 12.05 ERA, eight homers allowed and a 12/10 K/BB in 18 2/3 innings. The results will probably be ugly for now, but he might be a positive contributor in the second half.

The 32-year-old right-hander has been absolutely obliterated on his minor league rehab assignment, giving up eight home runs in just 18 2/3 innings of work, but the Mets are hopeful that he’ll be able to put that behind him and turn the page when he’s back in the big leagues. It goes without saying that fantasy managers should take a wait-and-see approach before trying to rush Montas back into their lineups.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters that this would likely be Montas’ final rehab outing before the club decides his future. He finished with only two strikeouts and threw just 80 pitches (47 pitches). There’s an opening in New York’s rotation next week with Tylor Megill (elbow) facing a multi-week absence, but it’s unclear whether Montas will get the call to fill the spot given the results during his rehab outings. He’s coughed up a staggering eight home runs over 18 2/3 innings during six rehab starts, which is less than ideal.

The right-hander also walked a batter and served up a home run in the miserable outing. He got stretched out to 53 pitches this time out, but the Mets are going to want to see the results improve significantly before he becomes an option to help out at the big league level. Montas has been shelved since spring training due to a lat strain.

Montas was lit up for three runs over 3 2/3 innings on Sunday in his latest rehab outing and will presumably need a couple additional tune-up starts before he’s ready to make his Mets debut. The 32-year-old veteran has been out since spring training recovering from a lat strain.

The veteran also walked three and struck out two while allowing two home runs. He threw 76 pitches in the outing but struggled with his command and has now allowed 12 earned runs on seven home runs in 12 innings during his rehab stint. With the Mets pitching well at the big league level, there is no need to rush Montas back, so we should expect him to make a few more rehab starts.
