Mushinski is a longtime Astros prospect who had a 5.45 ERA in 33 major league innings from 2022-24. He made his way to the Guardians system last season and had a 3.78 ERA and a 66/33 K/BB in 50 innings out of the bullpen for Triple-A Columbus. He should have a chance to compete for a bullpen spot in spring training.

The lone run scored in the first. Messick also caught a break in the fifth, oddly enough because his outfielder fell down. With Alek Thomas on first, James McCann had a hit to center. Angel Martínez picked it up on the run but then tripped over his own feet. The third base coach saw it happen and sent Thomas home, but Martinez recovered in time to throw him out. Ketel Marte had another hit afterwards, so the Diamondbacks were probably looking at a multirun inning if Martinez had stayed on his feet. Merrick, who struck out six, was in line for the win when he left, but the one-run lead was blown in the ninth. He should stay in the rotation and face the Rays next time out. Those in shallow mixed leagues probably can do better, but people in deeper formats might want to give him a try.

Messick, 24, will be making his MLB debut in his start Wednesday against the D-backs. The 2022 second-round pick has a 3.47 ERA and 119/42 K/BB over 98 2/3 innings in his 20 starts in Triple-A, so there’s some reward to go with the obvious risk of using him in a fantasy lineup.

Messick has joined the Guardians out in Arizona and will make his major-league debut during Wednesday’s series finale. The 24-year-old hurler has posted a solid 3.47 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 119/42 K/BB ratio across 98 2/3 innings (20 starts) this season for Triple-A Columbus. His fantasy appeal is strictly limited to extremely deep mixed leagues.
