Marte capped off a four-run uprising off of Jesús Luzardo in the opening inning with a two-run double. That would wind up being the extent of their offense in the ballgame and Marte’s only hit. The 36-year-old outfielder has actually had a productive season for the Mets, slashing .273/.346/.415 with eight homers, 32 RBI and seven stolen bases in only 296 plate appearances.

Look at Marte go. It’s his first game with two steals since Apr. 6, 2024 and just his second since 2021. It’s also his first game with a homer and a steal since Apr. 20, 2024. Playing mostly against lefties, Marte has hit .345/.387/.655 in 62 plate appearances during the second half. He deserves more time at DH, but that’s less likely to happen with Mark Vientos heating up.

Marte missed two weeks with a bruised right knee. He’s done solid work in hitting .270/.353/.387 this season, and he should resume starting against lefties, which will probably further cut into Ronny Mauricio’s playing time.

Mendoza added that Marte won’t require a rehab assignment, which puts him on track to return to New York’s outfield mix at some point this week. The 36-year-old veteran has been on the shelf since early July recovering from a right knee contusion.

The All-Star break is just next week, so it sounds like Marte should be able to rejoin the Mets before the end of July. When he does return, the Mets will need to decide if they’re keeping both him and Jesse Winker on the active roster, which would likely mean that Mark Vientos or Ronny Mauricio would need to head to the minor leagues.

The move makes room for Jesse Winker. Marte will be eligible to return as soon as play resumes after the break. Until then, Ronny Mauricio could take over his starts against left-handers.

Well, the Mets ran into the buzz-saw that is Chris Sale in this game. Marte was the only player with multiple hits while he and Brandon Nimmo were the only to reach base twice. No one in their lineup had an extra-base hit. In a season that began with him struggling to find playing time and seeming over the hill, Marte now has a .750 OPS and regularly hits in the two-hole when the Mets face a left-handed pitcher.

Marte has turned his season around in a big way. He has a .960 OPS over his last 15 games and has worked his way back into a nearly full-time role at designated hitter for the Mets since Mark Vientos went out with a hamstring injury. Sadly, as he’s now 36 years old, he’s no longer anything close to the prolific base stealer he once was with four on the season.

Marte took Landon Knack deep for his fourth home run of the season and now has 15 RBI to go with a .240/.350/.394 slash line. It hasn’t been a great season so far for the 36-year-old, but with Mark Vientos on the IL, Marte only has to beat out Ronny Mauricio for regular starts at DH. He could provide some value in the short-term if he gets hot.

It’s worth noting that Marte is ready to go after making a pre-planned early exit from the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader against the Cardinals. Simply put, he’s not hurt.

No word yet on exactly what happened, but Marte was lifted from the game in the fifth inning in favor of Jose Azocar. Expect the Mets to provide an update on Marte’s status as soon as more information becomes available.
