The 34-year-old southpaw had asked for his release from the Phillies on Saturday. Instead, he has been informed that he has made the team’s Opening Day bullpen and been signed to a one-year deal. Mayza posted a 5.40 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and a 10/2 K/BB ratio over 8 1/3 innings during Grapefruit League action. He’ll function in a middle relief role.

Mayza missed much of last season with a lat strain, posting a 2.89 ERA in 9 1/3 innings for the Pirates before the injury and a 4.91 ERA in 7 1/3 innings for the Phillies after being picked up for the stretch run. The 34-year-old lefty has a career 3.87 ERA in 382 relief appearances. He figures to have a difficult time making the Phillies out of spring training.

Mayza has been scooped up off release waivers after being jettisoned earlier this weekend by the Pirates. The 33-year-old southpaw will be eligible for the postseason with his new club. The 33-year-old lefty made seven appearances for Pittsburgh before hitting the injured list back in mid-April with a left lat strain that has kept him sidelined ever since.

Nothing has changed in the prognosis for the 33-year-old southpaw — who will be shut down from throwing for at least the next six weeks — this was done as a procedural move to free up a spot on the team’s 40-man roster for Matt Gorski who was promoted from Triple-A on Thursday.

Mayza heads to the injured list with former closer David Bednar to return to the big leagues. He’s posted a solid 2.89 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 8/1 K/BB ratio across 9 1/3 innings (seven appearances). He should be back in a couple weeks.
