It likely would have been Abner Uribe closing for Milwaukee tonight, but he wasn’t needed after the Brewers scored twice in the top of the seventh and seven times in the eighth to make it a 12-1 game. Megill averaged a season-low 96.3 mph with his fastball tonight. That’s 1.2 mph lower than his season average and 2.9 mph under his 2025 average. He was effective anyway, but that’s just not great.

Murphy refused to commit to changing closers after Wednesday’s extra-inning loss to the Blue Jays where Megill surrendered three runs in an ugly blown save. Simply put, the results haven’t been there for Megill this season and it might make sense for Milwaukee to turn the ninth inning over to Abner Uribe, who is worthy of a speculative roster spot in all fantasy formats until further notice.

Both Megill and Jeff Hoffman blew saves, and both have to wonder how much longer their leash will be. Megill has now allowed seven runs over his last two appearances, and his ERA is now at 14.73. It may be too early to make a switch for the Brewers — and Abner Uribe hasn’t exactly been dominant, himself — but this has been ugly.

Megill came on with the score tied at 3-3 in the top half of the ninth inning. He plunked CJ Abrams with a 1-1 pitch to start the inning then Joey Wemer reached on a bunt single while trying to sacrifice him to second. Luis Garcia Jr. followed with an RBI single to plate the go-ahead run then Jorbit Vivas reached on an error as he was attempting to sacrifice. Drew Millas then dropped down another sacrifice bunt and Megill threw it home thinking it was a force out when there had only been two runners on base. He was then mercifully lifted from the game. This alone probably isn’t enough for Abner Uribe to usurp the closer’s role, but yikes it was a bad outing for Megill.

Megill gave up four hard-hit balls, but only Bobby Witt Jr.'s grounder turned into a hit. Isaac Collins hit a 350-foot fly that would have been a homer in one ballpark and Vinnie Pasquantino delivered a 373-footer that would have been a homer in five. Fortunately, though, the game did not take place in Yankee Stadium. The Brewers never named a closer prior to the season, but there’s been no controversy so far with Megill getting the ninth and Abner Uribe setting him up. Megill has allowed one run in four innings to date.

Megill took the mound in the bottom of the ninth with a three-run lead for the save chance against the Royals. He issued two walks to bring the tying run to the plate, then struck out Vinnie Pasquantino to end the game with his second save of the season. Megill’s usage so far suggests he’s going to get most of, if not all, of Milwaukee’s save chances as long as he’s healthy and effective.

No one knew for sure which direction Brewers’ manager Pat Murphy would turn with his first lead to protect in the ninth inning — whether it would be Megill or Abner Uribe — and it took three days to finally get an answer. After the Brewers rallied late to take the lead in this one, it was Megill that was brought on to try to protect it. He made things interesting by allowing a leadoff single to Tristan Peters to bring the tying run to the plate, then rebounded to strike out Chase Meidroth and Munetaka Murakami before getting Miguel Vargas on a fly ball to end it. It’s still possible that Uribe could get the next opportunity, but Megill at least held serve in his first try.

Megill gets a $2.76 million raise after saving 30 games in his second year of arbitration. The Brewers have weighed trading him, since they have a brilliant alternative in Abner Uribe, but it would take a significant offer, as he’s still two years away from free agency.

Megill is arguably the best reliever available in trade talks or free agency at the moment, and it can’t hurt the Brewers that Robert Suarez just signed with a team that already had a closer. A trade would make things easier on fantasy leagues who wouldn’t have to decide whether to rank Megill or Abner Uribe higher on draft day. If Megill is dealt, both could enter 2026 as top-15 RPs, with Uribe potentially going in the top five.

Megill will kick off a bullpen game for Milwaukee on Saturday evening as they try to close out the best-of-five series after dropping two straight contests at Wrigley Field with a chance to eliminate the division-rival Cubs. The 31-year-old closer has recorded three outs in a pair of relief appearances this postseason after returning from a one-month absence at the end of the regular season recovering from a flexor strain.

Megill, who missed a month with the injury, has thrown to hitters in workouts this week. With Abner Uribe doing fine work in the ninth of late, Megill said that he doesn’t care if he closes against the Cubs.

Megill pitched the fourth today, as the Brewers weren’t going to wait around and see if there would be a save opportunity. He averaged 97.5 mph with his fastball, down 1.7 mph from his season average. Hopefully, he gets that back in the NLDS or he’s going to be a little more hittable than usual.

Megill makes it back to spearhead Milwaukee’s high-leverage mix heading into the postseason after missing the final month of the regular season recovering from a flexor strain. The 31-year-old stopper should reclaim the closing role from Abner Uribe heading into the playoffs, but he’ll likely operate in middle relief during Sunday’s season finale as he get into his first live game action in nearly five weeks.

The 31-year-old stopper wants to get one appearance under his belt to shake the rust off before heading into the postseason. He has been sidelined since the end of August due to a mild right flexor strain.

As long as he feels good on Saturday, it sounds like the plan is for Megill to be activated from the injured list on Sunday to get one real inning under his belt before heading into the postseason. The 31-year-old stopper has been shelved since August 27 due to a mild right flexor strain.

Megill is aiming for roughly 25-30 pitches in his latest throwing session and could make a minor league rehab appearance later this week, if everything goes well. Brewers manager Pat Murphy expressed optimism over the weekend that the 31-year-old closer, who is recovering from a mild flexor strain, could make it back for the final weekend of the regular season and be a full-go in time for the playoffs.

Murphy added that would be a potential best-case scenario for Megill, who is working his way back from a mild flexor strain. He’s scheduled to throw a bullpen session Tuesday and face hitters in a live batting practice session on Friday before the club decides his next steps. It certainly seems like there’s optimism he’ll be ready for the start of the postseason.

As long as he bounces back as expected, he’ll repeat the process in a few days before progressing to a live bullpen session. If he clears both of those hurdles, it sounds like he’ll be ready to rejoin the Brewers’ bullpen for the final series of the regular season.

Megill had a little bit of a setback when he struggled to bounce back from a BP session last week, and it seems clear he’d probably be resting right now if the postseason wasn’t so near. As is, he’s going to try to come back as soon as possible.

Megill told reporters that it’s a relatively mild strain and he’s hoping for a minimum stint on the injured list, which would put him back in Milwaukee sometime around mid-September. He added that he felt the issue after throwing 34 pitches in his last relief appearance on Sunday in a blown save against the Giants. The logical pickup here for fantasy purposes is hard-throwing Abner Uribe, who picked up a save during Tuesday’s series opener against the Diamondbacks.

Uh oh. Megill has struggled as of late, and it appears those issues are at least somewhat related to the injury. He’ll be out of action for at least two weeks, but his timeline should be updated shortly. Abner Uribe seems likely to get the save chances with Megill unavailable.

Megill entered the ninth with a one-run lead and allowed a double to Matt Chapman to start the inning. The 31-year-old right-hander walked Jung Ho-Lee to load the bases with two outs before surrendering the lead on a two-run single by Heliot Ramos. Megill has blown the save in three of his last four opportunities. While the Brewers still managed to win the game in his previous two blown saves, they weren’t as lucky in Sunday’s loss to the Giants.

Megill allowed two hits in the ninth inning as well as the tying run to score on a passed ball. It was just the fifth blown save this year for the 31-year-old right-hander. Megill’s win was his fifth of the year and he has 30 saves to go with a 2.20 ERA. He’s been a top of the line closer this year.

Megill was called upon to protect a three-run cushion in the final frame and needed just 19 pitches (13 strikes) to end it. He gave up a leadoff single to Carson Kelly but went on to retire the next three batters to preserve the victory, reaching the lofty 30-save threshold for the first time in his career. He’s converted 30 of 34 save chances this season to go along with a sparkling 2.05 ERA across 44 innings (47 appearances).

Given a one-run lead, Megill allowed a Ke’Bryan Hayes double that scored the tying run. He got out of the inning from there, though, and he saw the Brewers score three runs in the top of the 11th. Nick Mears then closed it out in the bottom of the 11th, allowing two runs — one earned — along the way. It was Megill’s fourth blown save and also his fourth win.

Megill’s save was his 29th of the season. The 31-year-old right-hander recorded two strikeouts in a perfect ninth inning, lowering his ERA to 2.14 in the process. Megill has been scored on only once in his last 13 appearances (12 1/3 innings) since the start of July. He’s establishing himself as one of the top closers in baseball this year.

Megill allowed a single to Cedric Mullins but struck out Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto to end the game. Megill now has 28 saves on the season but will likely be unavailable on Sunday after pitching on Friday as well. If the Brewers have a save opportunity in the next game, it might go to Abner Uribe or Shelby Miller.

It was a miracle that Megill converted this save. He retired Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo without issue before Starling Marte split the gap for a two-out double. While he’s not exactly the fleetest of foot at this point in his career, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza opted to leave him on second as the tying run rather than bring in a pinch-runner. Jeff McNeil then hit a single to center fielder Blake Perkins who threw a strike to home plate that beat Marte by about a foot. Backing up the play, Megill threw his arms in the air in jubilation that his center fielder helped him out of that jam.

Michael Harris II got the better of Megill for a solo home run that cut the Brewers’ lead down to one run, but that would be the only moment of stress here. Now with 26 saves on the season, Megill is tied with Jeff Hoffman for fourth-most in the league as he’s blossomed into one of the most reliable late inning relievers in baseball over the last two seasons.
