It remains to be seen if the 36-year-old hurler will actually accept the outright assignment or decide to peddle his wares on the open market instead. Neris has struggled to a 6.75 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and a 35/16 K/BB ratio over 26 2/3 innings in the big leagues this season.

The 36-year-old right-hander has been knocked around this season, posting a 6.75 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and a 35/16 K/BB ratio over 26 2/3 innings between the Astros, Braves and Angels. He still has enough swing and miss to his game that he’ll probably be able to find another team willing to take a shot on him on waivers.

Neris returns for his third stint with the Astros during his lengthy career, which spans back to 2014. The 36-year-old will likely operate in middle relief spots for Houston. He was cut loose earlier this week by the division-rival Angels after struggling in 21 appearances.

The Angels apparently have seen enough to know Neris isn’t going to help, as they waive him after he forged a 7.80 ERA in 23 appearances with the club. He’ll hit the waiver wire, and it’d be at least a little surprising if a team put in a claim. The 36-year-old can either report back to Triple-A Salt Lake or elect free agency if another team doesn’t show interest on the wire.

Neris elected free agency after Atlanta designated him for assignment, and has a new home a couple weeks later. The 35-year-old will likely need to pitch in a few games with Triple-A Salt Lake, but it’s not hard to see him being an option in the Angels’ bullpen in the coming weeks. Not a fantasy-relevant one, but an option nevertheless.
