Astros manager Joe Espada said Friday that Peña could begin a minor league rehab assignment in the next couple days. The 28-year-old shortstop has been out recovering from a hamstring strain since April 13. He figures to make it back to Houston’s lineup at some point in the next week or two.

If all goes well there, the 28-year-old infielder will then be cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment. Peña has been sidelined since early April due to a hamstring strain. He should only need a couple of games to get his timing back, with the expectation that he could potentially be ready to rejoin the Astros’ lineup next weekend.

Peña has checked every box in his rehab progression as he works his way back from a hamstring strain and should be ready to get back into game action later this week. There’s a chance he’s back in Houston’s lineup at some point next week.

Peña is expected to be cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment later this week. The 28-year-old shortstop hit the injured list with a hamstring strain earlier this month. There’s a strong possibility he’s back in Houston’s lineup at some point in early May.

Peña’s injury was originally described as knee tightness, but now the Astros are saying it’s a grade one hamstring strain. That’s not ideal, but Peña still might make it back around the end of the month. Until then, the Astros will be able to play Isaac Paredes and the rest of their infielders regularly, with Carlos Correa starting at short. Joey Loperfido figures to get more time in left with Yordan Alvarez DHing most games.

No word yet on the results of the tests that the 28-year-old shortstop underwent after being lifted from Saturday’s game with right posterior knee tightness. He has yet to be placed on the injured list yet though, which could mean that he’s facing a day-to-day type of situation. Stay tuned as the Astros should have an update on his status shortly.

Peña was unable to continue after advancing on a single in the fourth inning, and was replaced by Nick Allen. The 28-year-old will almost assuredly undergo testing, and his status for the upcoming two games against the Mariners and beyond will largely be determined by those results. If Peña misses time, Allen will likely see that time at shortstop.

So far this season, Peña has yet to start back-to-back games. The Astros are likely just being cautious with his fractured finger, but it remains to be seen when they will view him as a full-time player. Carlos Correa will shift to shortstop on Wednesday, which will allow Isaac Paredes to play third base and bat third against Garrett Crochet.

Peña is back at shortstop and leading off with Brayan Bello getting the ball for Boston after sitting out Monday’s series opener. The 28-year-old power/speed combo threat has started exactly half of Houston’s six games to open the season as he continues to work his way back from a fractured finger.

Peña takes a seat for the third time in five games to open the regular season as Houston continues to closely manage his ramp-up after missing the final few weeks of spring training with a fractured finger. It’s a tough situation for fantasy managers but the positive is that he’s healthy and able to contribute at all. It’ll be Carlos Correa back at shortstop and Isaac Paredes at the hot corner for Monday’s series opener at Daikin Park.

Peña was given a day of rest Saturday as he’s still not 100 percent from his fractured finger, but he’ll be back at the top of the lineup against Jack Kochanowicz and the Los Angeles pitching staff.

Peña went 2-for-5 with a stolen base on Friday during his season debut after sitting out Thursday’s opener. Fantasy managers should anticipate the Astros continuing to closely manage his workload after missing a couple weeks earlier this month recovering from a fractured finger. It’ll be Carlos Correa handling shortstop with Isaac Paredes at the hot corner to face Angels lefty Reid Detmers on Saturday night.

He’ll make his season debut after sitting for Opening Day. It’s unclear exactly why the Astros sat him yesterday when they sent him to Triple-A Sugar Land to take live at-bats, but fantasy managers can overlook that as long as Peña is ready to go. Against LHP Yusei Kikuchi, the Astros will use a lineup of: Peña, LF Yordan Alvarez, DH Isaac Paredes, 2B Jose Altuve, 3B Carlos Correa, RF Cam Smith, 1B Christian Walker, C Yainer Diaz and CF Brice Matthews.

The Astros had said Peña would be ready for Opening Day, and he looked ready after homering in his first game back from a fractured ring finger, but it will be Carlos Correa at shortstop on Opening Day with Isaac Paredes at third base. In fact, Peña isn’t even with the team. He is taking live at-bats in Sugar Land on Thursday. It’s unclear what that means for his availability over the next few days, but it would be a shock if he wasn’t in the lineup soon, considering the team decided not to put him on the IL. The Astros’ lineup for Opening Day is: Jose Altuve 2B, Yordan Alvarez DH, Isaac Paredes 3B, Carlos Correa SS, Joey Loperfido LF, Cam Smith RF, Christian Walker 1B, Yainer Diaz C, and Jake Meyers CF.

The biggest concern for Peña, which could’ve led to a brief trip to the injured list to open the regular season, was the lack of live at-bats resulting from a fractured finger he suffered earlier this month. The 28-year-old shortstop homered in Tuesday’s exhibition contest and figures to be in Houston’s lineup for Thursday’s opener against the Angels. It might take him a few games to knock off the rust and get back to full speed.

Pena also had a 361-foot flyout to go along with his 394-foot homer. Expectations were that he’d open up on the IL after suffering a finger injury in the WBC, but he made his case to start at shortstop on Opening Day tonight. If he was successful, that means the Astros will need to play Yordan Alvarez in left if they want to include both Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker in their initial lineup.

Peña will return to game action for the first time since suffering a fractured finger while playing for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. The 28-year-old shortstop progressed to taking on-field batting practice on Monday and there’s a chance he’ll be ready for Thursday’s season-opener against the division-rival Angels.

Peña hasn’t been officially ruled out for Houston’s season-opener later this week. The 28-year-old shortstop traveled with the club to Daikin Park for Monday night’s exhibition against Triple-A Sugar Land where he’ll take on-field batting practice. He’s made steady progress in his recovery from a fractured right finger and could be ready for Opening Day. The Astros are unlikely to make a final decision on his status until later this week.

The 28-year-old took batting practice on the field once again on Sunday without issue and participated in fielding drills. He has made quick work in his recovery from a fractured ring finger and it’s starting to sound increasingly likely that he’ll be in the Astros’ lineup when the regular season begins.

Espada told reporters that Peña took swings on Friday and will do so again this weekend. The 28-year-old shortstop hasn’t officially been ruled out for next week’s season opener. It would be Carlos Correa taking over at shortstop if he requires a brief trip to the injured list. He’ll need to progress to taking on-field batting practice before he’s cleared to return to game action. There should be a clearer picture concerning his availability in the coming days. This decision might come down to the wire.

The 28-year-old fractured the ring finger on his throwing hand during the first week of March, so it’s a good sign that he’s already throwing. If his finger is able to withstand the force of hitting off live pitching, there is a chance that he could be ready for Opening Day. If not, it doesn’t appear that he will miss too much time.

Peña fractured the tip of his finger earlier this week, but doesn’t feel that the injury will keep him out long. “I don’t know how it’s going to heal, I don’t know what the process is going to be like, but the goal is always to try to join the team for Opening Day.” We’re trying not to be influenced by the Astros’ poor track record with player return timelines in recent seasons, but we’d consider it a long shot that Peña is ready on Opening Day. The hope is that he plays not long after.

Less-than-ideal news. Peña will miss the World Baseball Classic based on this timeline. It does still give him a chance to be ready for Opening Day, but it’s of course possible that he misses more time than this based on the fact that they’re planning a later reevaluation. Nick Allen profiles as the Peña fill-in at shortstop on paper for the Astros if Peña misses the start of the season, and Allen won’t hack it as a fantasy option. It’s also possible that Carlos Correa could shift to shortstop in the short term and get Isaac Paredes in the lineup as a regular, though Correa has indicated that he’s trained only to play third base.

Peña didn’t think it was too bad after a grounder left his nail injured and bloody yesterday, but apparently the Astros are either operating out of a sense of precaution or this is worse than the original update indicated. Stay tuned for further updates from the Astros, but any kind of injury would likely force Peña out of the World Baseball Classic.

Astros general manager Dana Brown told reporters Peña was removed from Wednesday’s exhibition game in the Dominican Republic for precautionary reasons after fielding a ground ball that took a bad hop and struck a fingertip. There should be a definitive update on his availability for the impending international showcase at some point prior to the Dominican Republic kicking off the tournament on Friday evening against Nicaragua.

The announcement doesn’t come as a surprise, as the 28-year-old shortstop spent the majority of his time there and excelled during the 2025 campaign. How the rest of the Astros’ starting lineup shakes out remains to be seen. Pena was the leadoff hitter in 96 of his 125 games played in 2025, and hit .317/.372/.501 from the leadoff spot.

Peña ended the season on the IL with an oblique strain, but was tremendous when healthy in 2025, posting a .304/.363/.477 slash line with 68 runs scored, 17 homers, 62 RBI, and 20 steals in just 125 games. The Astros’ lineup should be a bit stronger next season with full seasons from Yordan Alvarez and Isaac Paredes, which makes Peña a strong target in fantasy leagues.

Peña will sit out Sunday’s regular-season finale after Houston was eliminated from postseason contention earlier this weekend. The 28-year-old shortstop was in the midst of the strongest season of his career before a rib issue put him on the shelf for over a month just before the All-Star break. He finishes with a robust .304/.363/.477 triple-slash line with 68 runs scored, 17 homers, 62 RBI and 20 steals in just 125 games.

While he’s making progress in his recovery from a left oblique issue, he’s still not ready to return. It’s possible if the Astros get officially eliminated from the playoff race over the weekend that he’ll just be shut down completely.

Peña has been doing some swinging. He’d probably be shut down from baseball activities right now if it weren’t late September, but he’s still holding out some hope of playing this weekend. Mauricio Dubón is starting at shortstop today.
