Peña will sit out Sunday’s regular-season finale after Houston was eliminated from postseason contention earlier this weekend. The 28-year-old shortstop was in the midst of the strongest season of his career before a rib issue put him on the shelf for over a month just before the All-Star break. He finishes with a robust .304/.363/.477 triple-slash line with 68 runs scored, 17 homers, 62 RBI and 20 steals in just 125 games.

While he’s making progress in his recovery from a left oblique issue, he’s still not ready to return. It’s possible if the Astros get officially eliminated from the playoff race over the weekend that he’ll just be shut down completely.

Peña has been doing some swinging. He’d probably be shut down from baseball activities right now if it weren’t late September, but he’s still holding out some hope of playing this weekend. Mauricio Dubón is starting at shortstop today.

Peña remains without a clear return timetable as he battles a lingering left oblique issue. The 28-year-old top-of-the-order table-setter’s absence has some serious ramifications for the Astros who sit one game behind the Mariners in the AL West and also trail the Tigers and Guardians by a game for the final AL Wild Card playoff spot. It’ll be Carlos Correa taking over at shortstop in his ongoing absence with Ramón Urías at the hot corner in this one.

Peña’s ongoing absence due to left oblique soreness complicates Houston’s path to the postseason as they battle with Boston and Cleveland for one of the final two AL Wild Card playoff berths. The 28-year-old shortstop has been one of the hottest hitters in baseball recently, batting .329 (11-for-29) with two homers and eight RBI over his last seven games. It’ll be Mauricio Dubón filling in at shortstop with Jose Altuve moving up to the leadoff spot in his absence.

It’s a tough break for the Astros and for fantasy managers. The Astros are hopeful that it’s a day-to-day type of injury, but obliques are known to be notoriously tricky and it wouldn’t be surprising to see his absence extend into next week. Expect the Astros to provide an update on his status after Sunday’s game concludes.

He also singled and walked. The slam, which brought the Astros within two runs in the seventh, ended up accounting for all of the Astros’ scoring tonight. It was his 17th homer in 125 games. After disappointing with 10 homers in 2023 and 15 in 2024, he likely would have approached his career high of 22 from his rookie season had he remained healthy this year.

Peña got the Astros started with a double off Jacob deGrom to lead-off the game which led to a two-run first and got the better of deGrom again in the fifth with a homer. That gave Peña 30 doubles, 16 homers, and an .838 OPS on the season in what’s been the best year of his career by far.

Peña reached in all five of his plate appearances, starting with a base hit in the first inning before scoring on a sacrifice fly. He added another hit and runs scored in the third and collected his third hit of the day in the fourth. Peña later drew a walk in the sixth and was hit by a pitch to reach for the fifth time in the eighth. The dynamic 27-year-old shortstop delivered a two-run double off of Bryce Elder in the second inning that extended the Astros’ advantage to 3-0. That would be his only hit on the night, but it was more than enough run support for Hunter Brown and company. Peña is having a terrific season at the plate, slashing .299/.357/.463 with 15 homers, 56 RBI and 20 stolen bases.

It doesn’t sound like there’s anything wrong physically with the dynamic 27-year-old shortstop, he’s just getting a breather. Mauricio Dubon will start in his place at shortstop and will bat ninth for the Astros against Braves’ right-hander Hurston Waldrep.

Peña seemingly broke this game open with his three-run homer off Orioles’ starter Cade Povich in the third inning. Then, the middle innings became hectic as 17 total runs were scored, but the Orioles were never able to take a lead or draw even. The 27-year-old shortstop tried to give it a go during warmups but wasn’t feeling up to it, so he’s being looked at by the Astros’ team doctors to determine exactly what’s going on there. Mauricio Dubon will start in his place and bat eighth for the Astros against Brandon Young and the O’s. Peña should be considered day-to-day.

It shouldn’t be surprising for fantasy managers to see the Astros closely managing Peña’s workload shortly after his return from the injured list last Friday. The 27-year-old shortstop has started four of six contests during that span. It’ll be Mauricio Dubón handling shortstop in his absence. He should be a full-go for Friday’s pivotal series opener against the Yankees.

Peña rejoins Houston’s lineup as their top-of-the-order table-setter for Sunday’s showdown at Fenway Park after sitting out Saturday’s contest for precautionary reasons. The 27-year-old shortstop went 3-for-5 on Friday night in his return from the injured list before leaving the extra-inning affair with hamstring cramping. Peña will get some extra time off to rest and recover during Saturday afternoon’s game at Fenway Park after making an early exit from Friday’s extra-inning marathon with a right hamstring cramp. The 27-year-old went 3-for-5 in his return from the injured list after missing five weeks with a fractured rib. It’ll be Carlos Correa taking over at shortstop in his absence with Ramón Urías taking over at the hot corner. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for the moment.

Peña was lifted out of an abundance of caution after his hamstring tightened up on him during his final at-bat of the eventual 10-inning marathon. He finished 3-for-5 in his return from the injured list at Fenway Park. The positive news here for fantasy managers is that he told reporters afterwards that he expects to play on Saturday and the issue isn’t related to the rib fracture that put him on the injured list for over one month.

As expected, Peña is back after missing a little over a month with his rib injury. The shortstop has been outstanding in 2025, and should absolutely be added back to fantasy lineups now that he’s back in the fold.

The Astros could sure use Peña back in their lineup and all signs point to him being ready for Friday’s series opener against the Red Sox. The 27-year-old got seven innings at shortstop under his belt in this one and appears ready to return to Houston.

If that game goes well, Peña very well could return to the Houston lineup for the weekend series against the Red Sox. The 27-year-old has been out of action since the end of June, and his return would be most welcome for both the Astros and fantasy managers who have seen Peña enjoy an excellent 2025 campaign.

Peña started at DH in his rehab debut and got four plate appearances under his belt. He struck out twice and was also hit by a pitch. The 27-year-old All-Star shortstop has been out since late June, recovering from a fractured rib. He’s expected to return later this week, possibly as early as Friday’s series opener against the Red Sox, but he will likely need to play at least one full game in the field before that happens.

Astros manager Joe Espada told reporters that Peña took seven at-bats, and that they went well. He’ll face live pitching again Sunday as he continues to work his way back from the rib injury that has sidelined him since the end of June. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Peña began a rehab assignment soon if things continues to progress at this pace.

Espada added that Peña has taken on-field batting practice recently as part of his ramp-up process at the team’s spring training complex in Florida. The 27-year-old shortstop is working his way back from a fractured rib that he suffered in late June. It’s possible he’s able to return at some point in the early stages of August.
