Quite the late demotion here and maybe the end of the line for Peguero in Pittsburgh. The 24-year-old was hitting .200/.273/.363 in 88 plate appearances this season, leaving him at .227/.278/.368 in 315 plate appearances since debuting in 2022. This was his fourth and final option year, and while it’s still possible he’ll have a career as a utiltyman, he no longer looks like a potential regular. The Pirates might drop him from the 40-man this winter.

Peguero provided all the offense for the Pirates in Coors Field on Saturday, driving in all five of the team’s runs. He led off the first inning with a solo shot off Austin Gomber. He took Gomber deep again in the fifth for a three-run blast. Peguero then hit his third home run of the game with a solo shot in the ninth. The 24-year-old infielder has all four of his home runs over his last three games.

Peguero got his third start in four games, batting ninth against the Giants on Tuesday. He took Justin Verlander deep for a solo homer int he fifth inning to put the Pirates on the board and later drove in a second run on a groundout in the eighth. The 24-year-old infielder should continue to mix in at shortstop, first base, and second base as Pittsburgh’s super-utility man.

Peguero is up to replace Adam Frazier now that Frazier is a member of the Royals. The 24-year-old isn’t guaranteed to get playing time — although in a rebuilding year they may choose to see what Peguero has to offer — and hasn’t had nearly enough success in the minors nor majors to suggest he’s worthy of a fantasy addition.

Peguero, 24, would take the roster spot of Adam Frazier after Frazier was dealt to the Royals during the All-Star break. The 24-year-old is a former Top 100 prospect who hasn’t had much success over the last couple of years, but it’s possible Pittsburgh will give him some run with the Pirates nowhere close to playoff contention.

Peguero was recalled on Friday and was on the bench for the first three games he was in Pittsburgh before starting the last two, one at second base and one at shortstop. Peguero was once one of the top prospects in Pittsburgh’s system, but he was hitting just .258 with a .691 OPS in Triple-A this season. Still, it might make sense for Pittsburgh to give him more at-bats than Adam Frazier and Jared Triolo in a season where they are not going to compete for the playoffs.

Peguero, 24, will be a utility option for the Pirates while he’s with the club. He’s it just .258 with a .691 OPS with Indianapolis, and while there’s still some long-term upside, he can be ignored in redraft leagues.

Peguero was once a top prospect for the Pirates, but he’s hit just .237 in 211 MLB at-bats and his shine has worn off a bit. Still, he’s off to a good start in Triple-A, going 13-for-41 (.317) with four RBI and two steals in 11 games. Perhaps he can work his way back to Pittsburgh for another shot.
