The scoreless innings are great, but Priester also threw just 18 of his 45 pitches for strikes, which is a 40 percent strike rate. On top of that, his cutter averaged 88.7 mph, which is 3.6 mph below his normal velocity. His sinker was also 2.3 mph below his normal mark, and he only threw five of them on the day, none for strikes. There still seems to be a long way to go here. We would not be stashing Priester in fantasy leagues unless you have lots of IL spots.

Priester has been out recovering from thoracic outlet syndrome since spring training and threw 29 pitches in the abbreviated outing. He walked three batters and posted two strikeouts. What’s more concerning is that Priester’s cutter averaged 89 mph, which is 3.4 mph below where he was at last season, and his sinker sat 91.2 mph, which is 2.7 mph below where he was last season. The 25-year-old is expected to require two additional rehab starts before he’s an option to rejoin Milwaukee’s rotation, but we’re still not convinced he’s anywhere close to being healthy.

Priester was diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome in spring training but was advised that he did not need surgery. He has been facing live hitters and will now begin what should be a lengthy rehab assignment. Even if Priester feels good and no longer has symptoms, we would expect him to make at least three starts in Triple-A since he never even got into a game during spring training.

Mathews also allowed just one hit and three walks while striking out eight. It was his best start of the season, but he does still sit with a 5.56 ERA on the year. He’ll need to string a few more of these together before being in the mix for a call-up.

Mathews also struck out six but walked three and allowed two home runs. The 25-year-old had a tremendous 2024 season in the minors and was solid last season in Triple-A after battling some arm fatigue. He had one solid start to begin this season, but has now allowed eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings while walking seven and striking out 11. He is likely behind both Richard Fitts and Hunter Dobbins for a potential call-up.

Command was obviously an issue for Mathews here. He threw 58 percent strikes on the day and just 50 percent first pitch strikes. The good news is that his fastball velocity held at 95 mph for the duration of his outing, and he registered a solid 27 percent whiff rate. The 25-year-old will likely see some MLB innings for a rebuilding Cardinals team this year, but he’ll need to get his command in order.

Priester was diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome towards the end of spring training after the Brewers sought multiple opinions to figure out why his wrist wasn’t feeling better after a long off-season. While Priester has avoided surgery for now, his return to the Brewers rotation should still be considered questionable until he is able to throw at full strength without any symptoms.

According to Jack Stern of Brewer Fanatic, Priester will have two “ups” and throw 20 pitches. The right-hander will then head to Arizona, and is set to begin a rehab assignment in the early portion of April. Assuming no setbacks, he should be back for the Brew Crew by the early portion of May.

The hope is that Priester can return to the Brewers’ pitching staff by the beginning of May, and Saturday’s session suggests he’s on schedule. The 25-year-old will throw one more bullpen before facing live hitters in Arizona.

The most optimistic estimate puts Priester’s potential return sometime around late April or early May. Given the serious nature of the nerve-related issue he’s recovering from, fantasy managers should anticipate Milwaukee taking a cautious approach with his ramp-up process. The 25-year-old’s absence opens the door for Brandon Sproat and Kyle Harrison to get early-season looks in the majors.

Generally, players do not often return on the optimistic timeline, which means we could be looking at mid-May or later for Priester. However, this whole situation is a bit murky since we know that he is dealing with a nerve issue that’s “in the T.O.S. [thoracic outlet syndrome] family,” but we have little other information. It’s best to avoid him in redraft fantasy leagues right now.

It’s hard to know exactly what to make of that. While you never want to hear thoracic outlet syndrome, Brewers’ manager Pat Murphy told reporters on Thursday that the issue should be treatable without surgery. He also noted that Priester threw lightly on Thursday and has a bullpen session scheduled for March 21. It’s a near lock that he’ll open the season on the injured list, but it’s anyone’s guess at this point on when he may be able to rejoin the Brewers’ rotation.

The Brewers and Priester still have no answers for why he is experiencing soreness in his right wrist. We know that he’s had MRIs on his wrist, shoulder, and elbow, but none of those have seemingly produced any answer, so he will seek another opinion. Having to see a specialist is usually never a great sign for a player’s health, but we’ll wait to see what comes of the visit. It’s looking like Kyle Harrison has a good shot to start the season in the Brewers’ rotation.

It was initially believed that Priester was behind some of the other starters because of wrist discomfort that carried over from last season. However, Murphy said on Thursday that the team was “thinking about even sending him to a specialist now. We’re optimistic that the shoulder MRI, the elbow MRI, everything is good. But something’s keeping him from progressing.” The fact that Priester had MRIs on both his shoulder and his elbow and is also potentially being sent to a specialist suggests that Brewers are not really sure what’s preventing him from being able to let it loose on the mound. At this stage, given the uncertainty, it’s hard to feel good about drafting Priester in fantasy leagues unless you’re in a deep league with multiple IL spots.

The Brewers have been taking it slow with a number of pitchers this spring, but there was no stated reason for their doing so with Priester until now. That the wrist issue has lingered is a surprise; he had one start pushed back because of it at the end of August, but he finished the season just fine from there. If he’s behind at the start of the year, it might not be an IL situation, as the Brewers could just continue to build him up in major league games.

Matthews opened the game with a HBP, a double, a run-scoring wild pitch and then a walk, leading to a mound visit. He was great after that, though, and he even picked off Juan Soto, who hit the double, from second base to end the first. Improved control would put Matthews in line to join the Cardinals rotation sometime this summer. Last year, he had a 107/74 K/BB in 94 innings in Triple-A.

Priester took over after a scoreless frame from opener Aaron Ashby and proceeded to keep the contest remained scoreless into the middle innings. The 25-year-old was the beneficiary of one of the more bizarre double plays in postseason history to end the fourth inning when Max Muncy’s 404-foot fly ball to left-center field came up a few inches short of a grand slam and resulted in mass confusion on the basepaths. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Curt Hogg, it was the first batted ball to travel over 350 feet and result in a ground-ball double play in the pitch tracking era.

Priester was awful from the get, as he gave up a solo homer to Michael Busch to begin his outing, and he was charged for three more runs — two of them after exiting. The 25-year-old was a solid option for Milwaukee for the majority of 2025, but this was ugly. Priester could be a starting option if the Brewers advance to the NLCS, but it’s far from a guarantee.

Priester gets the ball with a chance to propel Milwaukee into the NLCS where they would face either the Dodgers or Phillies. The 25-year-old right-hander, who didn’t end up pitching during the Brewers’ Game 2 win over Chicago, was outstanding in his Brewers debut during the regular season and will be making his first career playoff start on Wednesday evening at Wrigley Field.

Priester struck out four batters on the night while issuing one base on balls. He had allowed just one run through the first five innings — an RBI single by Spencer Steer in the fourth inning — but the wheels fell off a bit in the sixth. There, Priester allowed three straight hits to start the frame before turning the ball over to the bullpen. The 25-year-old righty got nine whiffs on 87 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 26 percent. He finishes a terrific regular season with a 13-3 record, 3.32 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and a 132/50 K/BB ratio across 157 1/3 innings in 29 appearances (24 starts).

Chad Patrick draws the starting assignment for Wednesday’s series finale against the Padres out in San Diego with Priester getting a couple additional rest days. The 25-year-old rookie has certainly earned them, pitching to a brilliant 3.25 ERA across 152 1/3 innings over 28 appearances (23 starts) in his Brewers debut. He’ll be a key component of Milwaukee’s postseason rotation behind ace Freddy Peralta.

The 25-year-old right-hander allowed just three hits and two walks on the evening. He carried a perfect game into the fifth inning until Jo Adell drew a leadoff walk and Luis Rengifo followed with a two-run blast. That was the extent of the damage done against him. Priester got 16 swings and misses on 93 pitches on the night — eight of those on his slider — while posting a strong CSW of 35 percent. The Brewers have now won each of his last 19 starts. He’ll try to extend that streak to 20 — which would tie an MLB record — when he takes on the Padres in San Diego on Tuesday.

Priester gave up five hits, walked one and struck out five. The 24-year-old right-hander has won back-to-back starts as he improves to 13-2 on the season. Priester has a 3.25 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 146 2/3 innings this year. He’s lined up to face the Angels at home next week.

Priester fought through some early trouble to settle into this game beautifully and wind up sticking around for seven innings. The Pirates made a lot of contact over the first few innings and scratched two runs across by the end of the third. Priester then proceeded to retire 14 of the final 15 batters he faced in a dominant display. Pittsburgh just couldn’t square anything up as he moved his sinker, cutter, slider, and curveball around the zone. He’s scheduled to take on the Pirates next time out.

Mathews was arguably the most exciting pitching prospect in baseball at this juncture last season when he blazed through four level to reach the doorstep of the majors. A combination of injuries and control issues derailed his 2025 campaign, but he’s strung together a handful of solid starts since the beginning of August, putting himself in the conversation for a late-season cameo with the Cardinals. He remains a work in progress in the control department, but there’s enough strikeout upside to dream on for fantasy purposes.

Priester was excellent on Saturday, scattering three hits while holding the Blue Jays scoreless through five innings until two hits, an error, and a sacrifice fly put a run on the board for Toronto in the sixth. Priester would be done after six frames at 82 pitches with three strikeouts. The 24-year-old right-hander will take a 3.28 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and a 107/45 K/BB ratio across 134 1/3 innings into a start against the Pirates in Pittsburgh on Friday.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy told reporters Priester will not require a trip to the injured list but will need a few extra days off. The 24-year-old rookie is on track to take the ball on Saturday against the Blue Jays. It’ll be Aaron Ashby and newly signed veteran Erick Fedde making a bulk relief appearance on Wednesday night in his place.
