The Astros DFAed Roa on Tuesday and he finds a new home on Thursday. Roa had a 5.19 ERA in seven appearances for the Astros this season, allowing runs in each of his last three appearances before being sent down, and walked seven batters against six strikeouts. The Twins continue to churn their pen and look for finds, we’ll see what they do with Roa in Triple-A.

The 26-year-old hurler posted a 6.75 ERA, 2.25 WHIP and a 2/2 K/BB ratio over 1 1/3 innings in his two appearances with the Astros. This wasn’t necessarily due to Roa’s ineffectiveness, it’s just that the Astros’ bullpen was completely overworked throughout the weekend and they had to make a move to get a fresh arm in there for Monday. Expect a corresponding move to be announced then.

Roa winds up making Houston’s season-opening bullpen after a strong showing in spring training. The 26-year-old posted a respectable 2.83 ERA across 60 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level last year and also made a pair of relief appearances for the Marlins. He’ll operate in middle relief for the Astros at the outset of the season.

Roa was a second-round pick for the Reds in 2020 and was with the team until he hurt his shoulder in 2024, and the team tried to sneak him through waivers. The Marlins claimed him, and he pitched to a 2.83 ERA in 60 1/3 innings for Triple-A Jacksonville last year. Roa elected minor league free agency at the end of the season and will now try to work his way into the Astros’ bullpen plans.
