Rodriguez is making steady progress towards his Angels debut after hitting the shelf with shoulder inflammation at the conclusion of spring training. The oft-injured 26-year-old former top pitching prospect could offer some appeal in deeper mixed leagues, but omnipresent durability issues cloud his long-term future.

Rodriguez hit the shelf at the conclusion of an encouraging spring training with shoulder inflammation and was limited to flat-ground throwing for the last few weeks. The 26-year-old former top prospect will require several weeks of build up before he’s ready for a minor league rehab assignment, which puts any potential return back into sometime in May.

It’s nice to here that Rodriguez is with the team as they opened the season and actually throwing to some degree. This is the first report on him since he was placed on the injured list with dead arm and shoulder inflammation and we know that based on his extensive injury history that any morsel of good news is worthwhile.

As expected, Rodriguez will open the regular season on the shelf after experiencing shoulder fatigue during the late stages of spring training. The 26-year-old former top pitching prospect was plagued by injuries during his Orioles tenure and it’s a troubling sign that his Angels run is starting to have the same vibes. It’ll be Ryan Johnson and Jack Kochanowicz taking the final spots in Los Angeles’ rotation to kick off the season.

Rodriguez is currently dealing with dead arm, and while the right-hander told reporters that the injury was “not serious,” it’s bad enough that he won’t be ready for the start of the season. Ryan Johnson and Jack Kochanowicz have been named the fourth and fifth starters for the Angels to begin the campaign. There should be an update on how long Rodriguez will be out in the coming days.

The 26-year-old has been playing catch and doesn’t sound too concerned with his issue: “I’ve had some serious issues in the past. This is not serious.” It’s nice to hear that he isn’t worried, but given his long list of arm injuries in the past, it’s hard to be overly optimistic that he won’t miss any time. It might be best for fantasy managers to avoid this situation in upcoming drafts this weekend.

Suzuki noted that the club will slow him down a bit as he works through the issue, though Rodriguez is still playing catch. While publicly the Halos have said that they aren’t very concerned, given the right-hander’s extensive injury history, it’s a troubling development. It’s going to make it that much more difficult for fantasy managers to call his name on draft day.

Rodriguez walked four, bringing his spring total to 10 bases on balls in 12 2/3 innings. Still, his stuff has been a little better than expected since being acquired from the Orioles. He was regularly sitting 95 mph in the early innings today, topping out at 96.5 mph, before fading in the fourth and fifth. The control issues aren’t ideal, and the Angels do have the option of sending him down for the start of the season. Still, they wouldn’t seem to have five better starters than him.

Rodriguez coughed up three hits, ine of those being a solo homer by Andrew Vaughn. He also issued a pair of walks while fanning two batters. Rodriguez’s results have been mixed at best in his spring action, but the big thing here is that he’s healthy enough to participate. There’s still considerable upside in his right arm, but it’s understandable that fantasy managers might — and probably should — take a wait-and-see approach.

The fact that Rodriguez, who struck out three and only issued one walk in this latest outing, is healthy qualifies as a major fantasy storyline this spring. The 26-year-old is just a few years from being widely regarded as one of the top pitching prospects in the sport before an avalanche of injuries derailed his career and kept him from reaching those lofty expectations. He’s impossible to trust right away in shallow mixed leagues but fantasy managers should monitor his early-season outings, especially if he’s going to keep missing bats with a near 25-percent strikeout rate.

Encouraging is that Rodriguez averaged 96.1 mph with his fastball and topped out at 98.6 mph today. That’s right where he was when last seen in the majors in 2024, though about 1.5 mph off from where he debuted at in 2023. We’re not confident that Rodriguez will prove useful in fantasy leagues this season after experiencing shoulder, lat and elbow problems the last two years, but we wouldn’t at all mind being wrong about that.

Rodriguez, who was acquired by the Angels from the Orioles for Taylor Ward last night, had surgery in August to remove a bone spur from his elbow. “That was something that’s kind of lingered with me for about three or four years now,” he said Wednesday. “I’ve had them for a while and kind of just got to the point where I couldn’t really pitch through it. Pretty sure that’s kind of what was causing some of the lat injuries.” Rodriguez said he’d be good to go this spring. If so, he’ll almost certainly be a part of the Angels rotation.

Rodriguez has some obvious red flags from a durability standpoint, but it’s a lot harder to get a pitcher with his talent than it is a 30-homer outfielder with questionable on-base skills. Plus, Rodriguez is making the minimum and is under control for four more years, whereas Ward is due in the neighborhood of $13 million in his final season before free agency. The 26-year-old reached the majors in 2023 as one of the game’s very best pitching prospects, but he missed much of 2024 and then all of 2025 with shoulder and elbow issues. Coming off surgery to remove a bone spur, he is expected to be ready for spring training. Overall, Rodriguez is 20-8 with a 4.11 ERA and a 259/78 K/BB in 238 2/3 innings as a major leaguer. If healthy, he’ll join Yusei Kikuchi, Jose Soriano and likely Reid Detmers in an Angels rotation that still needs at least one more starter.

Rodriguez had surgery to remove a bone spur from his elbow back on August 11th. He will begin a throwing program in October, and Elias feels confident that Rodriguez will be ready for spring training. However, it is curious that Elias also said the team is looking to add a “top of the rotation” starter to pair with Kyle Bradish and Trevor Rogers, but did not mention Rodriguez. Perhaps it was just a slip, or perhaps Rodriguez has work to do to show the organization that he can be counted on as a crucial starter for them.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas. The Orioles are hopeful once again that he’ll be ready for the start of spring training in 2026. He could wind up being an intriguing option for fantasy purposes if he can just find a way to stay on the mound.

The door is officially slammed shut on Rodriguez pitching this season for the Orioles, which means he can be safely dropped in re-draft formats where he’s still rostered. The 25-year-old right-hander’s status for next season won’t be clear until after next week’s debridement procedure on his elbow. He wound up missing the entire 2025 campaign due to shoulder and elbow issues, which makes it extremely challenging to forecast his future from a dynasty perspective. At this point, fantasy managers need to see him stay healthy and perform at something close to previous levels before rostering him again in any format.

It’d be good news is that is Rodriguez’s main problem, as that kind of surgery wouldn’t affect his 2026 season. Rodriguez still hasn’t been ruled out for the rest of 2025, but with the Orioles having written off the season, there doesn’t seem to be much point of him aiming to return in September.

Rodriguez was shutdown yet again in his rehab last week and was sent from imaging to determine the extent of the damage in his elbow. While there have been no further updates from the Orioles the fact that he is now seeking multiple opinion on that imaging is not good news. If he were to have to undergo surgery, it would likely put the entirety of his 2026 season in jeopardy considering how late in the year it is.

It feels extremely unlikely that Rodriguez will throw a pitch this season for the Orioles after being shut down last week with renewed elbow soreness. The bigger question is whether he’ll require a surgical procedure, which would put his 2026 campaign in serious jeopardy. There should be an update on the 25-year-old former top prospect’s status at some point later this week.

It’s the same issue that shelved the 25-year-old right-hander during spring training before he was ultimately shut down with a lat strain. While there had been renewed optimism over the past few weeks for Rodriguez to possibly return at some point this season, this setback lets all of the air out of that balloon.

Rodriguez remains without a clear timetable to make it back to Baltimore’s rotation, but the club has expressed optimism that he’ll pitch at some point this season. The 25-year-old righty, who is working his way back from a lat strain that cropped up during spring training, will be racing the clock to make it back since he’ll need a couple weeks of rehab starts to build up his pitch count and stamina before he’s activated.

Mansolino didn’t offer a full report, just that the right-hander continues to through throwing progressions and that there hasn’t been any setbacks. There’s still no timeline for the 23-year-old, but Mansolino reiterated that the Orioles are “hopeful” that the right-hander can pitch in 2025. If it were to happen, Rodriguez’s return would assuredly be in the latter portion of the year, and there’s no guarantee he’d have a role of fantasy significance if/when that occurs.
