It’s the eighth save of the season for Romero, but the first one he’s claimed since September 2. The left-hander threw 13-of-19 pitches for strikes while lowering his ERA to a healthy 2.09 in 2025.

Romero got the call in the ninth inning on Tuesday to close out the game against the A’s with a one-run lead. He tossed a clean frame, striking out one batter on his way to his sixth save of the season to go with a 2.13 ERA across 49 2/3 innings.

Riley O’Brien was tasked with the middle of the order in the eighth and got through it with only a hit batsman. That left seven, eight and nine for Romero, who induced a double-play ball after a leadoff single and then retired Isiah Kiner-Falefa to end the game. He now has five saves to O’Brien’s two since Ryan Helsley was traded.

Romero entered with the Cardinals leading 7-4 in the eighth inning and quickly set down the Rays in order — including a pair of strikeouts. He then returned for the ninth inning and though he allowed a two-out single to Junior Caminero, he would be left stranded at second base. The 28-year-old southpaw has done a very nice job for the Cardinals this season, registering a 2.31 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and a 45/21 K/BB ratio across 46 2/3 innings of work.

Riley O’Brien likely would have closed tonight, but the Cardinals added three runs to make it a five-run game in the ninth and then used Jorge Alcala to finish it up.

Romero issued a leadoff walk in a good at-bat by rookie Kyle Karros. He then struck out pinch-hitter Brenton Doyle before another pinch-hitter, Hunter Goodman, crushed a go-ahead home run to center field. Romero wound up striking out three in the inning, but the damage was done. He’s opened up a chance for Riley O’Brien, who threw a scoreless eighth innings, to get more save chances.

Romero came on to get the final out of the eighth inning with a man on first base and two outs. He allowed a single to Kyle Tucker but then retired Carson Kelly on a ground ball to shortstop to get out of danger. He then returned for the ninth where he got Justin Turner on a fly ball to center. Ian Happ then drew an eight-pitch walk to put the tying run on base, but pinch-runner Jon Berti was cut down attempting to steal second base. Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson then singled to put the tying run in scoring position before Romero finally got Matt Shaw to hit into a fielder’s choice to end it. It looks like the 28-year-old southpaw is near the top of the committee for save chances in St. Louis at the moment, making him a worthwhile addition for those speculating on saves.

Romero has two saves in three days for the Cardinals, but he may not be the full-time closer many think he is in St. Louis. After the Cardinals traded Steven Matz, Romero is now the only left-handed pitcher in the bullpen. On Monday, he was saved for the save situation because left-handed-hitters Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman were due up. According to Goold, that won’t always be the case, and Romero will be relied on to get tough left-handers out in the eighth inning if the Cardinals can’t add another left-handed pitcher to the bullpen. Goold reports that “The Cardinals intend to get Riley O’Brien, Kyle Leahy, and perhaps Gordon Graceffo some opportunities to save games if they can forge leads.”

After giving up a leadoff single to Shohei Ohtani, Romero was saved by Lars Nootbaar, who made an outstanding catch of Mookie Betts’ seemingly perfectly placed soft fly down the right field line. Romero then struck out Freddie Freeman and walked Will Smith before a Max Muncy lineout to right ended the game. We don’t see much reason to have a lot of confidence in Romero as the Cardinals’ closer, but since that’s their pick, he’s probably worth rostering in most formats.

Romero’s save is his first of the year, but it’s unlikely to be his last. He did allow the run, but Romero has been effective as seen in an ERA of 2.21, and there’s no better option with Ryan Helsley now a member of the Mets. Romero is worthy of rostering for those needing saves in the majority of leagues.

We’ll see if Oliver Marmol follows suit. Romero has a nice 2.04 ERA this season, but he’s considerably more effective against lefties than righties and a good team should be playing matchups with him. Kyle Leahy and Riley O’Brien are the right-handed alternatives to Romero.

It’s a bit under the recommended slot value of $6.81M for the eighth overall selection in the draft. Parker is an 18-year-old shortstop out of Purvis HS (MS) with projectable power and a strong hit tool, giving him all the makings of a viable fantasy asset in the future. He’s several years away from being an option to help out the Jays at the big league level however.

Parker’s twin brother Jacob also has a chance to go relatively high in this draft, but JoJo is the one who offers the potential to be a fantasy star in the coming years. The left-handed hitting shortstop has a smooth swing from the left side, and has a chance to be a major contributor in both the average and power category in the coming years. He’s not a great athlete, so his chances of staying at shortstop are far from guaranteed. Because he has a chance to get on at a high clip while providing pop, however, that bat can play at several positions. Parker will need time as most prep hitters do, but he could hit in the middle of an order someday; likely near the end of the current decade.
