Rengifo broke up Quinn Priester’s no-hit bid with his 386-foot (101.3 mph EV) two-run shot in the fifth inning. That would be his only hit in four at-bats on the evening. It has been a disappointing season overall for the versatile 28-year-old, hitting just .240/.291/.340 with nine homers, 43 RBI and 10 stolen bases (in 16 attempts) over 523 plate appearances.

The homer off Noah Cameron was Rengifo’s first since Aug. 10 and gave his first runs batted in since Aug. 20. A free agent for the first time at season’s end, Rengifo could be looking at taking a pay cut from the $5.95 million he’s making in arbitration this year unless he puts together a big finish. He has a .647 OPS right now, and though he does offer versatility, he’s not a very good defender at any one spot.

It qualifies as a surprise to see Rengifo absent from the lineup with lefty Bailey Falter toeing the rubber for Pittsburgh. It’s possible he’s dealing with some sort of physical issue, but that remains to be seen. It’ll be veteran Kevin Newman at the hot corner on Tuesday night against his former team.
