Rainey has been summoned to join Detroit’s relief mix heading into the final week of the regular season. The 32-year-old veteran reliever was cut loose by Pittsburgh prior to the All-Star break after being hit hard in 11 relief appearances earlier this season. He’ll presumably operate in middle relief situations for the struggling Tigers.

The 32-year-old right-hander was released by the Pirates just before the All-Star break after posting a troublesome 10.57 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and a 9/6 K/BB ratio over 7 2/3 innings in 11 appearances at the big league level. He’ll give Detroit manager A.J. Hinch another weapon to deploy in the middle innings.

Rainey gave up four runs while getting just one out Sunday and took the loss against the Padres. He had a 10.57 ERA overall in 7 2/3 innings out of the Pirates pen. The team will likely add another reliever as his replacement prior to Tuesday’s game.

Rainey will get a chance to help the Pittsburgh relief group, but he has struggled in Triple-A with a 6.00 ERA over nine innings. He’ll likely work in the middle innings while with the Bucs.
