Richards will head to the minors after failing to make Philadelphia’s bullpen as a non-roster invitee this spring. The 32-year-old journeyman showed well in a couple Grapefruit League outings, posting a respectable 3.38 ERA and 11/4 K/BB ratio across eight innings of work.

Richards bolsters Philadelphia’s relief corps entering spring training after making just five appearances last year between the Diamondbacks and Royals. The 32-year-old journeyman isn’t far removed from being a durable workhorse with the Blue Jays where he made a whopping 195 appearances over a four-year span from 2021-2024 before the metaphorical wheels came off. He’s a low-risk emergency depth addition for the Phillies.

Richards elected free agency last weekend instead of accepting an outright assignment from the Royals. He pitched just three innings in the big leagues for the Royals, posting a 12.00 ERA, 3.00 WHIP and a 2/2 K/BB ratio. He’ll add veteran help to a Diamondbacks’ bullpen that has been decimated by injuries this season.
