The 28-year-old hurler had been designated for assignment by the Red Sox earlier in the week. Van Belle has done a very nice job at the Triple-A level this season, compiling a 2.29 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and a 41/7 K/BB ratio over 51 innings in 12 appearances (eight starts). He’ll add extra rotation depth for the Reds.

Van Belle loses his spot on Boston’s 40-man roster with righty reliever Jorge Alcala coming over from the Twins in a small trade. The 28-year-old righty was called up earlier this week from Triple-A Worcester and didn’t end up getting into a game for the Red Sox. There’s a decent chance he’s scooped up off waivers by another organization in need of relief help.

He had a 2.29 ERA and a 41/7 K/BB in 51 innings over eight starts and four relief appearances for Worcester. The Red Sox will have him available in middle relief tonight, but if he impresses, he could make starts.
