Reds designated RHP Carson Spiers for assignment.

Spiers loses his spot on Cincinnati’s 40-man roster and could attract some interest on waivers. The 28-year-old former prospect will miss a significant portion of next season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

    Injury

Carson Spiers will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery.

A date for the surgery has not been set. Spiers has been out for the majority of 2025 with a shoulder injury, but it appears that he suffered a setback in the elbow during his rehab. He’ll miss all of 2025, obviously, and there’s a good chance that he won’t pitch in 2026 as well.

Carson Spiers (shoulder) is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment on July 3 in the Arizona Complex League.

The 27-year-old right-hander has been sidelined since late April due to a shoulder impingement. Given the long layoff, he’s likely to require an extensive rehab assignment before he’ll be an option to help out the Reds at the big league level.

Twins OF prospect Carson McCusker went 3-for-4 with two home runs, three RBI, and a steal for Triple-A St. Paul on Wednesday.

The massive 6'8" prospect is now up to nine home runs and a 1.071 OPS in 28 games so far this season. There is some swing-and-miss in his game, but that’s to be expected with a 6'8" power hitter. He also has a 41 percent hard hit rate and continues to do damage when he does make contact. McCusker is not a great defender and will likely only be a short-side platoon hitter in Minnesota, so there may not be tons of fantasy value, but with a very left-handed lineup, it makes sense for Minnesota to call him up and see if he can inject some power into the offense.

Reds placed RHP Carson Spiers on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder impingement.

Spiers heads to the injured list following a 94-pitch relief outing on Saturday against the Orioles following Hunter Greene’s early departure after just three innings. The 27-year-old righty was originally slated to take the ball for Sunday’s series finale. It’ll be Brent Suter starting a bullpen game for Cincinnati.

    Recap

Carson Spiers, who was slated to start for the Reds on Sunday, threw four innings and gave up four runs in relief Saturday against the Orioles.

Hunter Greene’s short outing meant Spiers was needed today, and he spared the Reds bullpen with a 94-pitch outing. It’s unclear now exactly what the Reds will do tomorrow, but they’ll have all of their usual relievers available if they want to try a bullpen game. Spiers is likely to return to Triple-A.

Reds recalled RHP Carson Spiers from Triple-A Louisville.

Spiers is up and will start Sunday’s game against the Orioles. The 27-year-old struggled in his two starts earlier this year while allowing eight runs over 9 1/3 innings, and wouldn’t be a great streaming option on paper. Probably off paper, too.
