What a find Smith has been thus far for Atlanta. Not only did he drive in a run in the second on a single, but he came up huge in the ninth with a three-run double that turned a 5-3 deficit into a 6-5 lead. Smith is a former top prospect who has at times looked the part, but consistent success has avoided him. It hasn’t to begin 2026 with a slash of .395/.415/.684 and 15 RBI over just 18 games.

Smith did his damage against Diamondbacks’ starter Ryne Nelson, swatting a 430-foot (109.1 mph EV) solo shot in the third inning that increased the Braves’ early lead to 2-0. He also walked in the fifth inning and scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Drake Baldwin. Smith has done a nice job so far for the Braves, slashing .375/.444/.750 with a pair of long balls and five RBI in his first 18 plate appearances.

A single, a sac fly or a walk would have done just fine, but Smith connected on Carlos Estévez’s final meatball and sent it 386 feet out to right. It was his lone hit tonight. He’s slated to serve as the Braves’ DH against righties until Sean Murphy returns from the IL and puts himself into the mix.

Both Smith and Farmer had opt-outs in their minor league contract with Atlanta so they’ve been informed that they’re on the club’s Opening Day roster already. Smith figures to get some opportunities at DH while Farmer will occupy a reserve role as a utility infielder. The Braves will officially add them to their active roster at some point prior to next week’s opener.

Smith’s chances of making the Braves got a huge lift with the Jurickson Profar suspension. Barring an addition, he seems likely to open up as the DH against right-handers and then perhaps hang around in a reduced role once Sean Murphy comes off the injured list. He probably wouldn’t be a mixed-league option.

The 30-year-old Smith, who just signed a minor league deal with the Braves last week, doesn’t seem like a fit for Atlanta’s roster, but that’s not the only team he’s auditioning for this spring. He had a nice run with the Giants last year, batting .284/.333/.417 over 225 plate appearances, though his exit velocity numbers didn’t really back it up.

Smith, 30, slashed a respectable .284/.333/.417 with five homers, 33 RBI and a 42/15 K/BB ratio across 225 plate appearances with the Giants during the 2025 campaign. He’ll provide the Braves with quality depth at the first base position.
