Sosa took Joe Ryan deep in the fifth inning for his 11th home run of the season. The 29-year-old has filled in admirably when the Phillies have needed him to start, posting a .279/.311/.475 slash line; although, he is far better against left-handed pitching.

Sosa ended up missing just over the minimum 10-day requirement while dealing with a right groin strain. The 29-year-old will be a utility option for Philadelphia, and he’ll replace Donovan Walton on the active roster.

Sosa went through “strenuous workouts over the weekend” and clearly responded well to them. Trea Turner (hamstring) won’t be ready to return to game action until the end of the week at the earliest. That means that Sosa should have a full series as the starting shortstop for the Phillies.

Philadelphia is going to give Sosa some extra time off to rest after wrapping up the NL East division title earlier this week. The 29-year-old bench infielder has been battling a lingering groin issue that cropped up last Friday night. He figures to be ready for the postseason.

It seems very likely that Turner will be sidelined by his recent hamstring injury, but at this point, we don’t know if it will be for a few days or a few weeks. Last season, Turner missed six weeks with a Grade 2 hamstring strain, so these injuries are not new for him. In deeper formats, Sosa would be a solid option given his lineup context, but he’s hitting just .231/.254/.350 against right-handed pitching this season, so he’s more valuable as a short-side platoon bat.

Sosa has been functioning in an everyday role while Otto Kemp and Bryson Stott have been platooning for the Phillies, but he’ll take a seat in this one against Rangers’ right-hander Merrill Kelly with both Kemp and Stott getting spots in the Phillies’ starting nine.

Sosa has now started six straight games at either second base or third base. The Phillies have seemingly started using Otto Kemp and Bryson Stott in a platoon, with Stott playing second against right-handed pitchers and Kemp playing third against left-handed pitchers (as he is today). Sosa moves around to accommodate those changes, but his presence as an everyday player makes him useful in deeper fantasy formats.

Sosa will undergo further evaluation to determine the severity of the injury, but Phillies manager Rob Thomson noted that he’s “feeling better” and could be available Sunday. The 29-year-old was already replacing Alec Bohm (rib) at third base, so if Sosa needs to miss time, it’s possible they’ll need to look externally for a potential third base option.

Sosa singled off of Valdez in the second inning, but the Phillies ultimately couldn’t cash him in from second base. He then smacked a one-out double in the fourth inning but was cut down attempting to score on a ground ball to third baseman Isaac Paredes. With his two-hit effort, the 29-year-old infielder is slashing a solid .290/.336/.411 with two home runs and 16 RBI on the season.

The 29-year-old infielder broke the game open with a majestic 430-foot (109.4 mph EV) three-run shot against Mets starter David Peterson in the fifth inning that extended the Phillies’ lead to 5-0 at the time. Sosa also singled in the third inning but was picked off of second base, Sosa is now hitting a healthy .279/.321/.394 with a pair of homers and 16 RBI in 113 plate appearances.

The 29-year-old infielder smacked a run-scoring single off of Michael Petersen in the eighth inning that pulled the Phillies to within six runs at 8-2. That would be as close as they would get. He has been swinging an extremely hot bat for the Phillies this season, slashing .324/.370/.432 with one homer, 13 RBI and zero stolen bases through his first 82 plate appearances.

Sosa punctuated the scoring for the Phillies with a two-run homer off Scott Alexander in the ninth, and it gave Philadelphia a 9-3 lead over the lowly Rockies. It’s the first homer of the season for the 29-year-old, but it’s worth noting that he’s only had 57 at-bats in 2025. Sosa should continue to see a decent amount of playing time for the Phillies, but a .386/.419/.526 slash could see his time in the lineup increase rapidly.
