As expected, Stanton hits the injured list after suffering the “mild” strain during Friday’s game against the Astros. It’s feasible this could be a short stint on the list for the 36-year-old slugger, and it’s possible — although far from a guarantee — that he’s back in the New York lineup by the early portion of May.

Stanton underwent an MRI earlier on Monday that revealed a low-grade calf strain. He’ll need some additional time off to put the issue to bed, but isn’t expected to require a lengthy absence. The 36-year-old veteran’s departure opens the door for Jasson Domínguez to continue getting opportunities at DH against right-handed pitching.

Stanton remains on the bench for the third consecutive contest with Jasson Domínguez, who is at DH and hitting sixth on Monday night, coming up from Triple-A to face a couple right-handed starters this week. There’s been zero indication the Yankees are going to place Stanton on the injured list, but it feels almost inevitable if he’s not going to be ready to go in a couple days. The 36-year-old will continue receiving treatment and resting as he continues to recover from a right calf issue that cropped up last week.

Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Sunday that they’ll make a decision on his status and whether or not he’ll require a trip to the injured list before Monday’s game. Ben Rice is serving as the Yankees’ designated hitter on Sunday with J.C. Escarra behind the dish for the Bombers against Astros’ right-hander Spencer Arrighetti.

Stanton left Friday’s win with tightness in his right calf, and the Yankees will not take any risks with the slugger. Amed Rosario is the designated hitter with Stanton day-to-day and hit sixth.

Boone seemed optimistic and was hopeful that they caught the issue early enough that it won’t be a lingering problem. The 36-year-old slugger will be reevaluated on Saturday. It’s still possible that the Yankees take a cautious approach and wind up placing him on the injured list for a couple of weeks.

Stanton exited after jogging gingerly to third base while running the bases after singling. Given his lengthy injury history and the Yankees propensity to play it safe, it wouldn’t be shocking at all to see Stanton wind up on the injured list here. In that event, Jasson Dominguez could get the call from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and would instantly become an intriguing option for fantasy purposes. Stay tuned.

Both hits came off Connelly Early. He would have added a second double later in the game if not for a fantastic catch from Ceddanne Rafaela at the wall in center. Stanton was in a 4-for-38 slump coming into tonight, leaving him at just .240/.296/.360 for the season.

It’s rare to see Stanton out of the lineup with a left-hander on the mound for the opposition, but the Yankees have done a good job giving him rest when needed this season in order to keep him healthy and productive. Ben Rice will function as the designated hitter on Sunday and bat leadoff against Cole Ragans and the Royals.

Stanton went 10-for-20 with a homer in the Yankees’ first five games in March, but he’s just 7-for-38 with no homers this month. He’s also hitless in 12 at-bats against lefties this season, so it’s worth wondering if maybe Ben Rice should be starting over him when the Yankees want Paul Goldschmidt in the lineup against southpaws.

Stanton had a routine day off on Wednesday. The 36-year-old will frequently get day games off to rest his ailing body, but he has been hot at the plate this season, going 10-for-20 with one home run and four RBI. It wouldn’t surprise us if he sits out Sunday’s day game, but he should be fired up in all lineups.

Stanton’s homer off Yennier Cano was hit 340 feet to right and would have left just two MLB ballparks, but that was just making things even. In his prior at-bat, Stanton crushed a ball 416 feet to center off Dean Kremer. Statcast said it would have been a homer in 23 ballparks, but it was a flyout today.

The hit, a fourth-inning single, didn’t actually factor into the run scoring. Neither did Stanton’s 383-foot lineout in the sixth, that would have been a homer in five MLB ballparks, or his 392-foot flyout in the eighth, which was a homer in eight parks. The lone run actually came earlier in the eighth after two walks and a double steal that resulted in a throwing error, allowing the go-ahead run to score. Stanton is now 5-for-20 with three homers this spring.

Stanton’s two homers traveled a combined 826 feet, according to Statcast. The 36-year-old veteran slugger’s fantasy appeal is strictly limited to deeper mixed leagues given his well-documented injury history and power plus counting stats profile. He’s still capable of unleashing the occasional gargantuan homer but he hasn’t topped 115 games in a half-decade, which limits his realistic full-season projection to somewhere in the 25-30 range.

Stanton did his damage off of Jose Urquidy leading off the second inning, clobbering an 0-1 cutter for a 424-foot (109.5 mph EV) solo shot to open the scoring in the ballgame. The 36-year-old slugger also singled in the contest, finishing the night 2-for-3. For the spring, he’s hitting .250 (2-for-8) through his first three games.

Stanton is still working through his tennis elbow injury — something that is going to likely be an issue for the rest of his career — but it’s encouraging to see him in the lineup relatively early in the Grapefruit League. When healthy, Stanton still offers significant power production potential, but he’s essentially a lock to miss significant time on the injured list at this stage.

“I can’t open a bottle,” Stanton said. “I can’t open a bag of chips … a bag of anything. That’s the way it is.” He plans to continue to play through the pain. Obviously, as he’s played just 582 of 1,032 Yankees regular season games since 2019, fantasy managers know what they are getting into at this point. Stanton will almost certainly continue to miss plenty of time this year, even though he has said he wants to play a full season.

Like clockwork, Stanton is red-hot just in time for the postseason. He smacked his first home run to put his Yankees on top in the first inning and then demolished a 451 foot no-doubter two frames later. On a per at-bat basis, he’s been one of the best hitters in baseball season with a .926 OPS and 23 long balls in just 242 AB. That’s better than a 50-homer pace for the 35-year-old slugger who still clearly has a lot left in the tank.

Stanton came up with the bases loaded in the fifth inning and hit a ground ball past the third baseman. The 35-year-old DH has 10 RBI over his last seven games. Stanton is hitting .264 with a .901 OPS and 59 RBI this year.

Stanton plated Aaron Judge with a sacrifice fly in the top half of the first inning to increase the Yankees’ early lead to 2-0. He then capped off a four-run second inning with an RBI single. The 35-year-old slugger is having a terrific season, slashing .271/.342/.573 with 20 homers and 51 RBI in only 244 plate appearances.

Stanton did his damage in the third inning, crushing a 3-2 slider from Sawyer Gipson-Long for a 429-foot (108.9 mph EV) solo shot that increased the Yankees’ advantage to 5-1. That would be Stanton’s only hit in five at-bats on the evening while striking out three times. For the season, the 35-year-old slugger is hitting an impactful .271/.345/.596 with 20 homers and 49 RBI in only 203 plate appearances. It’s the 14th time in his career — and the fifth consecutive season — in which Stanton has clubbed 20 or more long balls.

There’s turning back the clock, and then there’s whatever Stanton is doing this season. He has 19 home runs in just 59 games with a .987 OPS. His solo shot in this game was the only run Kevin Gausman gave up and Stanton hit it at an obscene 112.7 mph. This is an elite power hitter that looks like he hasn’t missed a beat and suddenly started seven of the Yankees’ last eight games after being stuck in a part-time role for most of this season.

This will be the first time Stanton has played left field since September 14, 2023, in Boston. While the Astros’ left field is shorter because of the Crawford Boxes, that can also make it harder to navigate and judge balls off the wall. The Yankees need to keep playing Stanton in the outfield because Aaron Judge is “getting close” to playing the field, but the team still doesn’t have a set date for when that will happen.

It’s Stanton’s eighth career five-RBI game and second in which he’s collected five while driving in all of his team’s runs; the other occasion was on July 5, 2016 against the Mets, back when he was still with the Marlins. Stanton now has 46 RBI in 51 games this season, which is easily his best rate since his final year in Miami in 2017.
