This would have been a Dennis Santana blurb, as he was certainly going to follow Soto and close tonight, but the Pirates busted out for five runs in the bottom of the eighth and then used Yohan Ramírez to finish a 7-1 win. Santana will now almost certainly be in line to close again tomorrow, since Soto has worked back-to-back days and Santana hasn’t worked since Saturday.

It’s just speculation, but it might that the Pirates used Dennis Santana in eighth and Soto in the ninth today just so that they’d have a lefty facing Henderson, who already had two hits in the game. Santana was perfect in the eighth, and Soto struck out both batters he faced before the long ball. He then fanned Pete Alonso to end the contest. We’re not sure why the Pirates seem to have this much faith in Soto, but it hasn’t cost them yet. Santana is still probably the favorite for saves in Pittsburgh, but it looks like it will be an annoying situation for a while.

This is noteworthy because Soto was warming for a save chance when the Pirates were up just 4-3 in the top of the ninth. That was also with three right-handed hitters due up. The save chance never materialized because the Pirates scored four runs in the inning, but that’s a good sign for Soto’s role in this Pirates bullpen.

Dennis Santana was called in to bail out Hunter Barco with the Reds up 6-3 in the eighth and wound up throwing a scoreless inning. That temporarily set up Soto for his first save chance, but that was denied after the Pirates scored twice in the top of the ninth. Soto came in anyway and did make things interesting before pitching around a single, a walk and a HBP. Soto is enough of a threat for saves in Pittsburgh to perhaps warrant a spot in deep leagues, but Santana would seem to be quite a bit more trustworthy in the ninth.

The deal, which was originally agreed to last week, is now official. Soto figures to operate in a setup capacity ahead of incumbent closer Dennis Santana for the Pirates after registering a respectable 4.18 ERA — 3.42 FIP — 1.43 WHIP and 70/24 K/BB ratio across 60 1/3 innings between the Orioles and Mets this past season.

Soto officially joins the Mets’ bullpen after forging a 3.96 ERA and 45/16 K/BB ratio over his 36 1/3 innings with Baltimore. He’ll be a high-leverage option, but not one who is going to get many — if any — save chances for the Mets.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that Cameron Foster and Wellington Arecena will be headed to the Orioles in return, and the deal is pending a physical. One day after Soto gets his first save for the Orioles, Soto is heading to the Mets, where he isn’t likely to get many chances to procure more of them. The left-hander will be a high-leverage option in New York, however, and he’s forged a 3.96 ERA over 36 1/3 innings with a 45/16 K/BB ratio. It’s a big upgrade for the Mets’ bullpen, but not a move that provides much fantasy relevancy.

Soto got the first save chance after Félix Bautista (shoulder) was placed on the injured list. He handled it well, but it’s worth noting he faced the bottom of the order, and also two of the three hitters he faced hit from the left side, so this could have been more based on matchups than a guarantee he’ll get the ninth inning with Bautista unavailable. Still, Soto does have closing experience, and those desperate saves may want to take a look.
