The 22-year-old infielder opened the scoring in the ballgame as he plated Matt Mervis with a sacrifice fly off of Kyle Hendricks in the third inning. Sanoja then smacked a one-out double off of Hendricks in the fifth inning and scored on an RBI double off the bat of Jesús Sánchez. With his two-hit attack, Sanoja is now slashing .252/.287/.336 with one homer, 12 RBI and three stolen bases (in six attempts) over 116 plate appearances on the season.

Assad grabbed at his side and immediately left the contest while warming up for the fifth inning. He had thrown 67 pitches (40 strikes) through four frames. He’s been on the shelf since spring training working his way back from an oblique strain. There should be an update on his status in the coming days.

Assad is making his first rehab start after being placed on the IL in the spring with an oblique issue. The 27-year-old struck out four and walked one in the outing, while averaging 93 mph on his fastball, which is actually up from 91.8 mph last year. Assad had a 3.73 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and 124/63 K/BB ratio in 147 innings for the Cubs last season. He could push Colin Rea or Ben Brown for a rotation spot after two more rehab starts.
