Strahm, 34, was again plenty effective in posting a 2.74 ERA in 62 1/3 innings for the Phillies last season, but his velocity and his strikeout rate were both down from 2024 and he’s become one of the league’s most extreme flyball pitchers. He’ll make $7.5 million next season in the final year of his deal.

Strahm’s option guarantee went into effect when he hit the 60-inning mark this month, but he still needed to pass the physical. Even if the Phillies had some questions about that, they’d probably welcome him back at $7.5 million. He has a 2.74 this season, and he’s posted a 2.71 ERA in 212 2/3 innings since joining the team three years ago.

Strahm just needs to pass a postseason physical as the final step before the option goes into effect, but that feels like a given. He has been a tremendous asset in the Phillies bullpen, and will continue to be next year as well.

Orion Kerkering came on with one out in the eighth inning and worked through some trouble before escaping with the lead intact. Strahm then took over in the ninth and made things interesting as well, issuing a leadoff walk to Jake Cronenworth who was then sacrificed to second base. Strahm got Elias Diaz to pop out foul to third base for the second out. He walked Fernando Tatis Jr. intentionally, then retired Luis Arraez on a fly ball to left field to end it. The 33-year-old southpaw finishes the first half with a 3.29 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and a 44/12 K/BB ratio over 38 1/3 innings to go with six saves and a victory.

The lead was one too many runs for a save, but it’s notable that the Phillies again lined up Orion Kerkering for the eighth and Strahm for the ninth tonight. Since Kerkering’s last save on June 19, he’s pitched the eighth in all four of his appearances. Strahm has pitched the ninth four times, plus one appearance in the eighth, and earned two saves.

Orion Kerkering got the top of the order in the eighth and worked a scoreless frame. Strahm gave up a one-out single to Ozzie Albies and then, after getting the second out, he walked Eli White, with a wild pitch on ball four allowing Albies to go to third. Strahm was able to retire Stuart Fairchild to end the contest. The Phillies appear mostly content to play matchups with Kerkering and Strahm at the end of games right now. Both are viable options in mixed leagues, but not great ones.

It felt like Strahm was about to blow this thing. He allowed a double and single off the bat to cut the Phillies’ lead to 4-2. Then, another single to bring the tying run to the plate. Nick Fortes put a ride into one with two outs that looked like it could bounce off the wall before Nick Castellanos – defensive standout – leapt to make the catch and end the game. Strahm and Orion Kerkering are jockeying for saves in the Phillies’ bullpen with them alternating the team’s last three save opportunities.

Strahm was summoned in the top of the ninth to close out the game with a one-run lead over the Blue Jays. He tossed a clean frame, striking out one batter to convert his third save of the season. Strahm should continue to be in the mix for regular save chances alongside Jordan Romano.

Strahm took over with a two-run advantage in the 10th inning. He allowed the inherited runner to score on a two-out RBI single by Danny Jansen and then allowed another single to Chandler Simpson before rallying to strike out Jose Caballero to end the ballgame. The 33-year-old southpaw has done a nice job out of the Phillies’ bullpen this season, posting a 2.87 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and a 20/5 K/BB ratio over 15 2/3 innings.

José Alvarado remains the top reliever in the Phillies pen, but manager Rob Thomson used him against the top of the order in the eighth tonight. He gave up one run, narrowing the Phillies’ lead to two, before Strahm retired the bottom third of the lineup in order in the ninth. It’s Strahm’s 10th career save. He had four for Boston in 2022 and then two and three in his first two years in Philly.
