Suzuki was diagnosed with a PCL sprain in his right knee earlier this week and the Cubs are expected to decide this weekend whether he’ll be ready for Opening Day or require a stint on the injured list. The 31-year-old corner outfielder, who belted a career-high 32 home runs and piled up 103 RBI over 151 games last year for Chicago, isn’t facing an extended absence, which makes him a strong target if he slides further than he should in fantasy drafts. It would likely be Matt Shaw getting the nod in right field to open they year if Suzuki isn’t ready for next week’s opener. Young slugger Moisés Ballesteros’ playing time would be impacted if Suzuki is limited to DH exclusively while he continues to recover.

Counsell elaborated to reporters that Suzuki underwent an MRI earlier this week which showed a minor sprain of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in his knee. The 31-year-old right fielder will be shut down and continue receiving treatment through the weekend before the Cubs determine his next steps. He remains without a definitive return timetable, and given the nature of the injury, it’s impossible to rule out a potential trip to the injured list with Opening Day just over one week away. The encouraging news is that Suzuki isn’t dealing with a potential season-ending injury or facing a long-term absence.

Counsell elaborated to reporters that Suzuki underwent an MRI earlier this week which showed a minor strain of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in his knee. The 31-year-old right fielder will be shut down for at least a couple days before the Cubs determine his next steps. He remains without a definitive return timetable, and given the nature of the injury, it’s impossible to rule out a potential trip to the injured list with Opening Day just over one week away. The encouraging news is that Suzuki isn’t dealing with a potential season-ending injury or facing a long-term absence.

Suzuki will undergo imaging to determine the severity of the injury, and whether he’s dealing with any structural damage, after being evaluated by Cubs team doctors on Monday. There should be a definitive update on his status at some point later this week. The 31-year-old right fielder suffered the injury during Japan’s loss to Venezuela over the weekend. He put together the strongest all-around season of his big-league career last year, hitting .245/.326/.478 with 32 home runs, 103 RBI and five steals in 151 games.

It sounds like Suzuki is still traveling back to Arizona from Miami where he suffered the right knee injury during Japan’s World Baseball Classic loss to Venezuela on Saturday night. Once the Cubs’ doctors and training staff are able to evaluate him, the team should have another update on his status. Stay tuned.

The 31-year-old outfielder sustained the injury while attempting to steal second base. He was slow to get up, grabbed at his knee and had to limp off of the field. He’ll head for further evaluation. All fantasy managers and Cubs’ fans can do now is wait and hope for the best. There should be some sort of update on his status after the conclusion of Saturday’s game.

Japan’s offense was stifled by Australia’s pitching in this one, as it took them until the seventh inning to scratch out a run. Suzuki strolled to the dish with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth inning and worked a walk to force in a run, increasing Japan’s lead to 4-1. That run would prove to be the difference in the ballgame. The 31-year-old slugger is already having a terrific tournament after blasting a pair of home runs in Saturday’s victory over Korea.

Suzuki went deep in the first and third innings, respectively, before drawing a bases-loaded walk to put Japan ahead in the seventh inning. Red Sox slugger Masataka Yoshida followed with a two-run single to give Japan a comfortable three-run cushion. He came up empty on a diving catch attempt in center field early in the contest that led to a pair of runs crossing the plate but made up for it with a two-run shot in his first at-bat before adding a go-ahead solo shot a couple innings later. The 31-year-old impending free agent is coming off a career-high 32 homer campaign with the Cubs last year. He’ll be a top-20 range outfielder in fantasy drafts this spring.

Both said they’d be open to the possibility. Suzuki is entering the final year of a five-year, $85 million pact he signed after coming over from Japan. Happ signed a surprisingly modest three-year, $61 million extension in April 2023, which was about five months before he would have been eligible for free agency for the first time. The Cubs should have interest in retaining both, but they do potentially have Kevin Alcántara ready to take over for one of the two next year.

Suzuki has been bumped up to the cleanup spot to face Brewers ace Freddy Peralta, with Ian Happ moved down a couple spots, after going 3-for-11 with one homer and a pair of doubles in Chicago’s Wild Card Series victory over San Diego. The 31-year-old corner outfielder finished the season with an impressive power surge and is clearly building some momentum heading into fantasy drafts next spring. Here’s the full lineup: Michael Busch (1B), Nico Hoerner (2B), Kyle Tucker (DH), Suzuki (RF), Happ (LF), Carson Kelly (C), Pete Crow-Armstrong (CF), Dansby Swanson (SS) and Matt Shaw (3B).

Suzuki delivered a game-tying homer against Padres starter Nick Pivetta to lead off the fifth inning, immediately followed by a go-ahead shot from Carson Kelly. It was his lone hit in three at-bats, but it provided a massive momentum shift for Chicago’s lifeless offense at the time. The 31-year-old slugger’s late-season power surge — five homers in his final four regular-season games — has clearly carried into October.

The 31-year-old slugger crushed a 379-foot (99.1 mph EV) solo shot off of John King in the fifth inning to give the Cubs an early 1-0 lead. Rather than giving him a breather in the season finale, Cubs skipper Craig Counsell kept Suzuki in the lineup and he responded with his fifth home run in his past four games and looks primed for the postseason. He finishes a terrific 2025 campaign slashing .245/.326/.478 with 32 homers, 103 RBI and five stolen bases in 651 plate appearances.

Suzuki has three homers in two days after going 38 straight games without one. It’s his second MLB grand slam. Suzuki was 2-for-16 with the bases loaded in his first two seasons with the Cubs, but he’s 12-for-22 with 27 RBI in those situations since the beginning of 2024. The 30-homer season is his first in MLB, but he had two in Japan, topping out at 38 in 2021.

Suzuki took Mets’ starter Nolan McLean deep for a solo shot in the fourth inning. McLean was at the end of his outing in the sixth inning and Suzuki hit a three-run home run to chase him. Suzuki hadn’t hit a home run since August 6 against the Reds, a span of 38 games. He’s hitting .244 with a .787 OPS and 97 RBI this year.

It appears to be nothing more than a routine day of rest for the 31-year-old slugger. Suzuki has been in a funk at the plate lately, slashing just .216/.355/.257 with zero homers, five RBI and a 20/16 K/BB ratio over 93 plate appearances in his last 21 ballgames. Perhaps a day off to clear his head will do some good. Willi Castro will start in his place in right field and will bat eighth for the Cubs against Zack Littell and the Reds on Saturday evening in Cincinnati.

Suzuki played the role of spoiler in the seventh inning on Thursday, smacking a two-out double that broke up Hunter Greene’s no-hit bid. That would be his squad’s only hit in the ballgame. On the season, the 31-year-old slugger is slashing a healthy .244/.324/.459 with 27 homers, 91 RBI and five stolen bases across his 618 plate appearances.

Suzuki has been out of action for nearly one week at this juncture as he deals with an undisclosed illness. Cubs manager Craig Counsell revealed that he traveled with the club to Pittsburgh, so fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now. It’ll be rookie slugger Moisés Ballesteros continuing to occupy the DH spot with versatile utility specialist Willi Castro patrolling right field in his absence. Hopefully there will be some clarity on his status at some point soon.

There’s little incentive to rush Suzuki back with rookie Moisés Ballesteros swinging a hot bat at the moment. There should be some additional clarity on the 31-year-old’s status before the weekend wraps up. He’s presumably day-to-day heading into Monday’s series opener against the Pirates.

Suzuki opened the scoring in the ballgame with a two-run double off of Tanner Gordon in the top half of the third inning. That would wind up being the extent of the Cubs’ offense in the ballgame. It was also Suzuki’s lone hit. The 31-year-old outfielder is having a solid season in the middle of the Cubs’ lineup, slashing .247/.325/.478 with 27 homers, 89 RBI and four stolen bases in 570 plate appearances.

Suzuki will get a day off — at least to begin Thursday’s contest — with Owen Caissie lined up in right field, and Kyle Tucker operating as the designated hitter. It’s been a bit of a rough go for Suzuki in August, as he’s hitting just .207 with a .630 OPS over 77 at-bats.

The homer was liner crushed to left at 110.4 mph. Suzuki, who has spent most of the season contending for the MLB lead in RBI, has slipped some recently, driving in just two runs while hitting .115 in his previous 15 games. This puts him up to 84, leaving him tied with Riley Greene and Taylor Ward for sixth place and 10 behind Kyle Schwarber in first place.
