Skubal beat out finalists Garret Crochet and Hunter Brown to win his second consecutive Cy Young. Skubal received 26 of the 30 first-place votes, with Crochet getting the other four. He’s the first to do it in the American League since Pedro Martinez back in 1999-2000, which is pretty good company. Skubal finished 2025 with a 241/33 K/BB ratio and 2.59 ERA, and while there’s some question as to where he’ll be playing in 2026, he’ll be well worth taking early in every league he’s eligible to play in.

Despite rumors swirling around the Tigers trying to trade Skubal away due to failed contract negotiations, Nightengale reports that “The Tigers will at least listen on Skubal, but would have to be completely overwhelmed.” However, with Skubal making it clear that he won’t sign an extension with any team that trades for him, it’s unlikely anybody will make a sizable offer for the left-hander. As far as Skenes goes, “The Pirates won’t even listen to trade proposals for Skenes, so don’t bother calling.”

Skubal enters as the overwhelming favorite to capture his second consecutive Cy Young Award after posting a dominant 2.21 ERA with a 241/33 K/BB ratio across 195 1/3 innings over 31 starts. Crochet, the likely runner-up, wrapped up his first season in Boston with a stellar 2.59 ERA and a 255/46 K/BB ratio across a junior-circuit-leading 205 1/3 innings in 32 starts. Brown’s inclusion among the three finalists guarantees Houston a compensatory pick after the first round of the 2026 MLB Draft. The 27-year-old right-hander logged a sharp 2.43 ERA across 185 1/3 innings in 31 starts. The winner will be announced on Wednesday, November 12.

If Skubal hits the trade market, every general manager with a pulse should already be calling Detroit. Sammon’s addition to the offseason rumor mix comes just days after Jon Heyman of The New York Post noted that the Tigers and Skubal remain nearly $250 million apart in long-term extension talks. The 28-year-old ace is set to hit free agency next offseason, making it increasingly plausible Detroit could explore trade offers if that massive gap proves unbridgeable. Barring major offseason moves, New York will open next season with one of the most intriguing young cores in baseball, featuring top pitching prospects Nolan McLean, Jonah Tong and Brandon Sproat. What they lack is a proven frontline starter — making Skubal a near-perfect fit. It’s conceivable that McLean or Tong could headline a prospect package in a potential blockbuster.

Heyman adds that Skubal, who will reach free agency at the conclusion of next season, is seeking a contract extension in the $400 million range and that Detroit’s offer last offseason was shy of the $170 million that Garrett Crochet received from the Red Sox back in April. It’s unsurprising to see a significant gap in any negotiation, but this is a Grand Canyon-sized divide. The 28-year-old southpaw is the odds-on favorite to win his second straight AL Cy Young Award in a couple weeks after another dominant campaign where he posted a magnificent 2.21 ERA and 241/33 K/BB ratio across 195 1/3 innings over 31 starts. It’s within the realm of possibility the Tigers could consider dealing Skubal before he reaches free agency if it becomes apparent that the two sides aren’t close to finalizing a long-term extension.

As far as non-answers go, this one is pretty fascinating. It’s true that Harris can’t say, “I’m going to let him walk in free agency.” That’s against the rules, since it could take away from Skubal’s market. Harris absolutely could say, “I’m going to make every effort to keep Tarik in a Tigers uniform for many years to come.” Except he didn’t. Let the trade speculation begin.

Skubal was pulled after throwing 99 pitches in the sixth, and one can’t help but wonder if A.J. Hinch regrets that decision. The 28-year-old was spectacular; at one point striking out seven straight hitters while mixing in his devastating change and touching triple digits on the radar gun. Skubal’s season is over, but he should be one of — maybe the — first pitcher’s off the board in all eligible formats.

The Tigers are facing elimination today, but they’re not going to crush their chances in a potential Game 5 by using Skubal on short rest today. Casey Mize is getting the start against the Mariners.

The 28-year-old southpaw racked up nine strikeouts on the evening while issuing just one base on balls. All of the damage done against him came via the long ball as Jorge Polanco tagged him for solo homers in the fourth and sixth innings. Skubal got 16 swings and misses on 97 pitches on the night, registering a CSW of 31 percent. He’ll now need the Tigers to at least split at home in order for him to take the mound in a decisive Game 5 back in Seattle on Friday.

Skubal, who topped out at 13 strikeouts during the regular season, became the 14th pitcher to strike out 14 in a postseason game. The others to do it since 2000 were Roger Clemens in the 2000 ALCS, Tim Lincecum in the 2010 NLDS and Gerrit Cole in the 2019 ALDS. Skubal topped out at 101.0 mph with his fastball today and his 99.1 mph average was up 1.5 mph from the regular season. He generated 26 missed swings with a 39 percent CSW, and he allowed just two hard-hit balls. The lone run was the product of two infield singles, with a walk mixed in, during the fourth. Game 2 of the best-of-three series will be played Wednesday, with Casey Mize and Tanner Bibee set to start.

With a playoff berth secured, Detroit will hold back their ace for Game 1 of next week’s Wild Card Series. Chris Paddack will start Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Red Sox at Fenway Park with the AL Central title still up for grabs. The Guardians own the head-to-head tiebreaker, so Detroit would need a Cleveland loss to Texas to claim the division.

Skubal punched out eight batters on the night awhile issuing three walks. He kept the Guardians off the board entirely through the first five innings until a circus broke out in the sixth inning. There, Steven Kwan led off with a bunt single, Angel Martinez followed with a sacrifice bunt but reached first as Skubal threw the ball away. Jose Ramirez then plated a run with a twenty-seven hopper toward third base. Martinez then scored on a wild pitch. Skubal recorded the first out of the inning on a strikeout and then balked Ramirez over to third. He scored the go-ahead run on a bounce out off the bat of Gabriel Arias — completing a three-run rally without the ball leaving the infield. He’ll carry a 2.21 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and a 241/33 K/BB ratio into his final start of the regular season on Sunday against the Red Sox — a start that the Tigers may need to win in order to make the playoffs.

Detroit can’t afford to take any chances with their AL Central division lead evaporating at a rapid pace following five consecutive losses combined with Cleveland’s surreal 10-game winning streak. Skubal will attempt to set the tone during the opener of a pivotal three-game series in place of Jack Flaherty. The decision also puts the 28-year-old ace in line to take the ball for next Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Red Sox, if needed.

In spite of the side issue that forced him to leave his last start, Skubal’s velocity was better than usual today and he wound up with 20 whiffs and a 32% CSW. The nine strikeouts moved him to 233, surpassing his career high from last year. Skubal finished his first Cy Young season with a 2.39 ERA and a 228/35 K/BB in 192 innings. Right now, in one fewer start, he has a 2.23 ERA and a 233/30 K/BB in 189 1/3 innings. He’ll face Cleveland again next week. As of right now, he’s slated to go Wednesday and make just the one more start. However, if things continue to tighten up, the Tigers could instead set him up to start Tuesday and Sunday.

It’s a massive relief for the Tigers, and fantasy managers, after Detroit’s ace left Friday’s start against the Marlins with left side tightness. The 28-year-old reigning AL Cy Young winner has been dominant again this season, posting a microscopic 2.26 ERA with a 224/28 K/BB ratio across 183 1/3 innings over 29 starts. He may have his next turn skipped or pushed back a few days, but all signs point to him avoiding a trip to the injured list. Expect additional clarity on his status for Thursday’s scheduled start against the Guardians once he resumes throwing early next week.

Skubal will undergo precautionary imaging to determine the severity of the issue after exiting Friday’s start against the Marlins with a trainer in the fourth inning due to left side tightness. The 28-year-old fantasy ace expressed cautious optimism after the game that it’s nothing serious, but the Tigers aren’t going to take any chances with the postseason looming. There should be an update on his status at some point this weekend.

Skubal was removed from Friday’s start against the Marlins in the fourth inning due to tightness in his left side. The star 28-year-old hurler expressed cautious optimism after the game that it’s nothing serious, but we’ll wait and see what the imaging shows. Expect the Tigers to provide an update on his status prior to Saturday’s battle against the Marlins.

He’s currently undergoing additional evaluation to determine the severity of the injury. The good news is that it’s nothing arm related. With a large lead in the American League Central, the Tigers will probably take a cautious approach here and make sure that he’s right for the postseason rather than rushing him back into action before he’s ready. Stay tuned.

It’s unclear at the moment exactly what happened, but Skubal grabbed at his left side after delivering a pitch and called for the training staff, then after a short discussion he was pulled from the ballgame. The Tigers’ ace will head for further evaluation. Expect the club to provide an update on his status as soon as more information becomes available. All Tigers’ fans and fantasy managers can do now is wait and hope for the best.

The star southpaw piled up six strikeouts on the evening. He didn’t allow a hit until Bryan Ramos smacked a two-out double in the fifth inning. That was the only time that a runner reached second base against him. Skubal generated just 10 swings and misses on 90 pitches on the night — five of those on his changeup — while posting a CSW of 28 percent. Now 13-4 on the season, he’ll carry an impressive 2.10 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and a 222/28 K/BB ratio (180 innings) into Friday’s matchup against the Marlins in Miami.

Kyle Finnegan and Rafael Montero finished up for the Tigers. Skubal settled for four strikeouts and eight whiffs with his velocity down a tad today, but the Royals went quietly anyway. It’s the 11th time this season that Skubal has pitched at least six innings without allowing a run. The AL Cy Young favorite improved to 12-4 with a 2.18 ERA ahead of a start next weekend versus the White Sox.

Well, this one got weird. Skubal blanked the Tigers over the first five innings before giving up one run on a fielder’s choice in the sixth. He took a 3-1 lead into the seventh, and things got wonky. Zach McKinstry made a pair of errors to make the damage unearned in the frame, but Skubal gave up a grand slam to Shea Langeliers and a solo homer to Colby Thomas, so he’s not without blame. Still, even without a win, fantasy managers will sign up for six innings with 12 strikeouts and just one earned run. He gets the Royals on Sunday.

The star southpaw allowed just three hits and two walks in the ballgame. The only real threat against him came in the fourth inning as Yainer Diaz smacked a two-out single and Ramon Urias followed with a double into the right field corner, but Diaz was cut down at the plate attempting to score. Unfortunately for Skubal and for fantasy managers, the Tigers couldn’t scratch out a single run of support for him. He got 25 swings and misses on 95 pitches in the contest — 12 of those on his changeup — while registering an elite CSW of 39 percent. He’ll look to strengthen his resume for another Cy Young award as he brings an 11-3 record, 2.32 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and a 200/25 K/BB ratio (159 1/3 innings) into Monday’s tilt against the Athletics in West Sacramento.

Skubal did not have his usual swing-and-miss ability, as he struck out only three and initiated only 11 swings and misses among his 99 pitches. He was also excellent minus the third inning, as he gave up all three runs in that frame. Even in an effort where Skubal wasn’t close to his best, he’s still able to provide seven innings and allow only three runs. He’ll be back on the bump against the Astros on Tuesday.

Skubal is fine from a physical standpoint, but the Tigers are going to give him an extra day of rest before taking the ball for Thursday’s series opener against the Twins instead of facing the White Sox on Wednesday to close out a three-game set. It’ll likely be a bullpen game for Detroit instead. The 28-year-old fantasy ace struck out six and allowed four runs over just 4 2/3 innings on Friday in a no-decision against the Angels his last time out. It’s a nice development for fantasy managers since he’ll get to face an inexperienced Minnesota lineup in the wake of their trade deadline teardown.

Skubal gave up six hits, walked two and struck out six. The 28-year-old left-hander allowed four runs for the first time since July 11 against the Mariners. Skubal had his shortest outing of the year. He has a 2.35 ERA and 187/21 K/BB ratio in 145 1/3 innings this year. Skubal is lined up to face the White Sox on the road next week.

Skubal was dominant over six shutout frames, allowing just two hits and no walks while striking out ten. The Phillies would finally get to him in the seventh. A base hit and a double put the Phillies on the board with a run before Nick Castellanos took him deep for a two-run blast. Skubal would end his day after the seventh still in line for the win. The 28-year-old left-hander will take a 2.18 ERA, 0.83 WHIP, and a 181/19 K/BB ratio into a start against the Angels in Detroit on Friday.

Skubal was clutch when he needed to be on Saturday, stranding three runners in the fourth inning, then stranding the bases loaded in the sixth as he struck out the final batter to keep the Blue Jays scoreless. The 28-year-old left-hander will take a 2.09 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, and a 171/19 K/BB ratio across 133 2/3 innings into a start against the Phillies on the road on Friday.

It’s merely a procedural move to put Skubal back on Detroit’s active roster for Saturday’s start against the Blue Jays after spending a couple days away from the club on paternity leave. The 28-year-old fantasy ace is in the midst of another transcendent campaign with a sublime 2.19 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 164/16 K/BB ratio across 127 2/3 innings (20 starts).
